Oakley is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 24,558 at the 2010 census. Oakley is part of the Redwood City–San Francisco-Oakland Combined Statistical Area. It lies on the Hayward Fault and has been hit by earthquakes three times. The first Englishman to settle in what is now Oakley was John de Anza who saw it as a place where water could be drawn from the river right near his cabin. He named it after General James K Stockett's Regiment which had passed through on their way to join General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in suppressing the 1834 Sacramento rebellion. In 1851, George W Richards built an adobe house on what is now Main Street that became home to several families until 1857 when John N Fehrenbach started building a small mill on clarification Creek about one mile east of town limits. In 1859 he laid out street grid for town with two blocks long and four wide streets running north-south and two blocks wide east-west with alleyways connecting them. A post office was established at this location on February 13th, 1860 under the name "Fremont". The first store opened in 1861 by J P Condon with a 5×10 foot square window above ground level at Second and Pacific Streets. In 1865 Jack Alderfield opened another store across from Masonic Hall (now First Baptist Church). By 1870 there were 10 businesses in town including six stores, one hotel, two tanneries, one brewery and five blacksmith shops along Main Street alone This period of growth came to an abrupt end when fire destroyed much of downtown Fremont during an evening firestorm on December 14th1870 devastating most structures within 2 miles radius A new downtown was created consisting of several buildings erected between 1871 and 1880 including:the State Capitol Building (1871),the Tribune Building (1872),the Methodist Episcopal Church (1875),the Masonic Hall (1876),and finally the Post Office Building (1881). This new downtown survived until 1949 when it caught fire again destroying most structures within 1/2 mile radius

Oakley is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Los Angeles–Fremont region. The first Europeans to visit Oakley were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on October 22, 1542. A later group of Spanish soldiers led by José Gabriel Margarita explored what is now Kern County in 1769. In 1821, James Wickersham named the area that includes present-day Oakley after John Quincy Adams because he thought this would make him more popular with residents of nearby Bakersfield who had supported Adams during the presidential election of 1800. In 1851, David Hackett built a sawmill on the River Tujunga near modern day Hacienda Heights and began operations. By 1865, Hackett's mill had become one of the largest in California and its output helped to drive down prices for goods exported from Kern County. In 1867, Oakley incorporated as a village under the name of "Oakleysville". The following year saw construction begin on what is now downtown Oakley – an initial cost of $1,500 was raised by civic leaders through local taxation to build a schoolhouse and other civic amenities; this structure served as town hall until 1930 when it was replaced by the current building (originally known as "the Old Courthouse" since it was used from 1868 to 1830). The amount spent on infrastructure alone makes Oakley one of Southern California's most prosperous villages during its early years; however over time Richardsonsburg became more important while Oakleysville slowly lost some significance due primarily to declining taxable values within its boundaries until finally being annexed into Bakersfield in 1984. During World War II service members living in or aroundOrangevale founded Mater Dei Academy which became one of Northern California's leading private schools for students grades Pre-K-12th grade girls only (enrollment peaked at 1,600 pupils) before eventually merging with former Bishop Amabile High School located east Orangevale (now Cathedral Catholic High School) in 1990 which increased enrollments well beyond pre-Kindergarten levels thereby ending enrollment at Mater Dei Academy effective September 30th 2009 although many talentedgirls continue their education there thru Advanced Placement programs .

Oakleys history dates back to 1859 when it was land belonging to John Fitch and his wife. In 1860, J.Fitch donated two acres of his land to the City of San Bernardino for the purpose of becoming an incorporated town which would be known as "Fitchville". In 1892, Fitchville became Oakley when one-half of the vote in a incorporation election resulted in a tie between Oakley and San Bernardino.
