In 1853, two guns were fired at a group of settlers while they were working near the mill. no one was injured but this event served as another warning to future trespassers. Gun ownership increased throughout the 1850s and 1860s because of concerns over border wars and outbreak of slavery within America. By 1870, guns had become so prevalent that local militias had been formed to protect citizens from outlaw gangs and bands who could not be trusted with firearms. As fighting began between Mexican Americans and Anglo settlers across the border, shotguns became more popular among these groups because they could shoot accurately into distance without hitting targets close by. In 1916, Oakleys militia helped protect local farmers from bandits who looted their crops and burned their businesses during World War I. Two years later, rifleman from that same militia opened fire on Mexicans protesting entry into Utopia Valley after they refused to stop building homes below grade along River Road (now Interstate 15). This event marked the beginning of what would become known as The Gun Renaissance in Oakleys history; where people turned their attention towards firearm protection instead of simply enjoying hunting trips or target shooting sessions
