Oakley comes from the word "oak" meaning chestnut tree and "leys" which means settlement or farmstead. In 1872, John C. Frémont discovered gold here and named the town after him. This was also where he first gathered supplies for his journey into Spanish territory to find more gold mines. In 1912, Oakley was incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly because of its natural resources: fruit trees, timber, water rights and minerals. In 1968 it became a part of the City of San Francisco. Growth has slowed since then but there are still many businesses in Oakley that rely on its natural resources including agricultural exports to Mexico and other countries as well as imports from Asia and other parts of the world
