Oakley is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Oakley was founded in 1853 by James Baugh and his wife Anna Maria Baugh on land that now includes most of the current town of Oakleyshore. In 1892, John Dickey opened the first store in what is now downtown Oakley. In 1898 Drago-Italia rifles were made here and sold to US military officers stationed overseas. The town's first gun shop was located on Third Street and it served as a source for handguns purchased by residents of other nearby towns such as Hercules and Lafayette. One local resident recalled "In those days there weren't any stores like they have now...There wasn't anything else east of Stockton." Gun manufacturers early on included A&P Rifle & Pistol Company (later known as Browning), Colt Manufacturing Company (later renamed Springfield Armory), Winchester Repeating Arms Company (later renamed Remington Arms) and Sharps Manufacturing Company (now Smith & Wesson). By 1900, only A&P remained in business while Colt, Winchester and Sharps all went out of business during the Panic of 1907. The discovery in 1906 of gold fields near Sacramento led to an influx of settlers into eastern Contra Costa County; some new towns were born from this growth including Antioch, Pleasanton, Fortunato Heights and Warfield along with Oakleyshore. However little development occurred until after World War II when a community effort began to erect railroad tracks through rural areas leading up to Oakland making it easier for goods brought overland to be unloaded at various point within reach; this increased demand for goods led to more manufacturing activity taking place in Oakleyshore not just concerning handguns but also farm implements, bicycles etc.; additional businesses sprang up such as hardware stores or tailors catering specifically to these needs before finally becoming defunct or entering into bankruptcy during the 1970s suburbanization which accelerated during that decade especially following diminishment in real estate values due principally to inflationary forces imposed by technological advancements parkway projects throughout much East Contra Costa County . It is named for Cleveland Oakenhall, an American pioneer who arrived in 1847. Oakley began as a small ranching community in 1906 when brothers George and Harry Sawyer opened a trading post near the Russian River. In 1912, they founded theoakleysilverminingcompany to exploit silver deposits near their post. The company became one of the largest silver mining companies in California and eventually produced more than $1 million worth of silver ore from its mines between 1912 and 1928. The Sawyer brothers also developed a large citrus crop that helped make Oakley one of the leading citrus towns in Southern California during the early 20th century. In 1916, they built what is now called The Oaks Apartments (now part of Pacific Palisades), which are still seen as one of Oakleys most iconic landmarks today. In 1937, John D’Alessandro started operating Jadwin Paper & News Corporation out of his home on Ventura Boulevard until it merged with Hearst Corporation to form Golden West Publications that year. D’Alessandro continued to operate Jadwin paper until his death in 1954; he was considered to be one of the most influential paper merchants in Californias history because he made major contributions to both newsprint production and marketing throughout his career). During World War II, Oakleys breweries produced beer for military service troops stationed along Highway 395 between Bakersfield and Redding; these breweries were later sold off to various private interests before being reopened by Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) as Three Rivers Brewery in 2002-2003 under new management led by Drs./CEO James Sweeny and Dr./President/CEO Tom Saunders (the first African American president/ CEO of any Fortune 500 corporation).
