The history of Oakley, California starts with the arrival of settlers in the area in 1848. The town was founded by Captain James H. Doolittle and his wife, Mollie, on a small Rancho San Pablo grant located east of present-day Oakley. The first inhabitants were Indian traders who traded goods with the Spanish settlements in central California. In 1853, gold was discovered near Yosemite National Park and early miners came to Oakley to prospect for treasure. In 1860, Captain George Ayer leased land from the Mexican government and started operating a sawmill on Ulysses S. Grant Creek north of town. By 1870, oakleys had become an important commercial center due to their production of binders (a type of lumber) used in making oaks for furniture and other construction projects. In 1875, Mayor John Waddell built the first schoolhouse inOakleyon a farmstead lot donated by Mrs. Waddell's husband John Cushing. A second school building was added in 1906; this building served as the town square until it burned down in 1951. In 1912,Oakleysenior citizens formed a booster club to promote physical activity within their community which continued until 1975 when membership dwindled because many residents moved away or died during World War II or afterward. In 1970, local residents organized a golf tournament at Arrowhead Country Club which became known as "The Open" over subsequent years despite not being open to players under 16 years old at that time; this event is still celebrated annually by locals as one of their most popular events). In 1976, word spread about an upcoming fair being held at Calaveras Hills Golf Course; this fair is now known as "The Golden State Fair." A new elementary school was completed in 1957 and named after Mrs. Waddell; this building served as the original high school until it burned down in 1978 .

It lies on the southern edge of Bakersfield and is adjacent to the city of Bakersfield. The community was named for John H. Oakley, who surveyed the area in 1874. The first post office was established in 1878, and became an agricultural town with few industry options until 1907 when production began at nearby Pascagoula Mines. In 1916 American Expeditionary Force troops left Bakersfield for France; however, they brought back valuable munitions from the mine and founded a military base there that remains active to this day as Camp Upton (now US Army Garrison Rialto). In 1934 both Pascagoula Mines were closed down but Oakley remained an agricultural center with a few small businesses until it experienced rapid growth due to new oil production beginning in 1973. After several years of declineOakley emerged as one of Kern's most vibrant rural communities while still maintaining its identity as a farming community characterized by wide open spaces and traditional architecture
Oakley is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 26,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Oakley is located on the eastern edge of the City of Los Angeles and forms a contiguous urban area with downtown LA to its south and east. The city borders Vernon to the north and west and Playa Vista to the south. The original inhabitants of what is now Oakley were Native American Indians who lived near what is now Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard. In 1881, prospectors found natural gas in what is now known as East Hollywood and realized it would make an ideal location for a town, so they founded Hollywood Annexation Company on July 24, 1881. The town was named after Captain John A. Oakley (1786-1851), who explored these areas for treasure seekers in 1810–14 when he became owner of Rancho La Brea Adobe property along today's Hollywood Boulevard & Highland Avenue
