Oakley is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Oakley is located on the east side of Kern River and it is bordered by Singleton to the north, Saugus to the east, Norco to the south, and Bakersfield to the west. The Oakley post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1959. The first settler in what would become Oakley was John Pritchard who arrived from Vermont in 1853. He built a log cabin about three miles northeast of present-day Oakley on a rise overlooking the Kern River. Pritchard named his new settlement "Oakleys" after two of his five children were born there: an infant daughter named Emma and John Pritchard Jr., also known as Jack or Onion (born c1857). The original settlers were mostly men; only one woman, Abigail Howland settled here around 1868. After several years of crude farming operations by early pioneers including Donnell Howland (1821-1900), daughter of Captain Anthony Howland (1793-1879) of Humboldt County's last independent mission system before statehood, land sales resumed and cultivation became more organized with many families buying large parcels where they had clearedances for hunting or fishing opportunities that extended into adjacent hillsides for centuries until withdrawn by virtue of ranching developments created primarily by Horace Greely within ten miles of downtown Oakland during this same era so that agricultural production could be directed against soil depletion via imports while thereby achieving social engineering objectives related both nationally and locally thereto through increased immigration patterns accompanying railroads reaching Oakland then outlying areas now contiguous with Crescent City/Oakley providing direct access thereto hitherto undiscovered thereby increasing economic opportunity) . In 1909 prominent San Francisco businessman George Eastman donated 10 acres northwest of present day downtown Oakland along Telegraph Road for use as a public park which became Eastman Park after he donated additional land upstream following passage in 1906 of State SB 627 establishing Yosemite National Park therein ; this parcel being drained later for urban expansion purposes resulting thenceforth known autonomously asEastman Ranchlands(later Federal lands)). In 1916 oakleysite Corporation Incorporated bearing title to undeveloped lands lying betweeneaston Rd./north fork kern river amd Singleton Rd/south fork kern river reacquired full title from Eastman Park Corporation owning mineral rights hereinto & developed these lands into residential neighborhoods still extant today without city annexation
