In Oakley, California, a longstanding tradition is to don firearm hats. Firearms hat society began in the early 1900s as a way for people in Oakley to show their support for the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. The hats have come to be associated with patriotism and NRA membership, and are often worn during local Rifle & Pistol Meetings and other firearm events. The origins of the firearms hat can be traced back to 1892, when two brothers named George and Harry began making hats out of felt. The first firearms hats were designed specifically for members of the American Rifleman Association (ARA), an organization that enjoyed rights and privileges not accorded other gun-owning groups. It wasn’t until 1922 that NRA member John Fenton created his own firearms hat company in Oakley. So Fenton started manufacturing Hats For Heroes: A Tribute To America’s Armed Forces (HATFOR) – a collection of patriotic caps made from different materials including cloth, felt, straw, woolen thread and metal parts – which sold exclusively at military encampments across the country from 1924 to 1933. Although most handguns were still imported into America through England or France at this point, there was growing demand for American-made firearms products among Americans who increasingly relied on imported goods for their needs. Consequently, throughout much of the 1930s Master Gun Maker Magazine featured articles about how individuals could make their own firearms hats from various materials available on hand or ordered from specialty stores like Remington Arms Company (RA). As illustrated by one article published in 1935 entitled “How To Make A Pistol Hat From Straw And Metal” numerous individuals were able to produce distinctive firearm hats using whatever materials they had at hand or found lying around their homes. In 1938 NRA member Jack Dempsey made national headlines when he became President Roosevelt’s personal aide while he vacationed aboard his yacht Newport News (now part of Norfolk Naval Shipyard). When news reached Roosevelt that Al Capone had been arrested and convicted on tax charges in New York City—an event Witness Protection Program agents called “the Crime Of The Century”—NRA member Dempsey went wirelessly into action and mailed him a specially constructed pistol grip cap complete with chinstrap closure! Although these days many people only remember Dempsey for this stunt rather than his later years as president (and unsuccessful candidate), it is generally recognized that HATFOR was an important precursor to modern gunhat culture. Oakley, California is home to the world’s second largest hat store. It was founded in 1892 by Edwin Oakley and his wife, Sarah. The store has been a mainstay in the community for over 100 years. In 1938, Edwin Oakley passed away and his wife continued to run the business until her death in 1971. She was followed by her son, Edwin Jr., who ran the store until 1983 when it became a part of David Laughlin’s company, Laughlin HatCo. The store closed again in 1990 but reopened as an independent business under the name “Oakleys” in 1992. In 2002, the store moved from its original location on First Street to its current location on Wabash Avenue Inside the mall they also opened up a hat department which included used hats and sunglasses along with new sales items such as figurines and key rings
Oakley, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population of the town was 4,812 at the 2000 census. Oakley is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The name Oakley comes from an old Indian word meaning "a good place to plant trees." The first settler in what is now Oakley was J.D. Dryden who came in 1853. A post office called Drydenville was established in 1857, and dropped the letter "e" in 1861 when it became known as Kern County. In 1875, John Leland moved his family to this location and started a store named Leland's Mill which grew into one of the largest mills on the Kern River until it closed its doors in 1942. The first school was built in 1888 by Mrs. Capps and Mr. Bowen (the father of Mrs. Bowen). It served grades 1-4 until 1912 when another school building was erected which served grades 5-8 until 1952 when sixth grade students were sent to Pajaro Valley School for two years due to overcrowding at Kern High School which had been built nearby on Willow Street (now Main Street). In 1923, Dwight D Eisenhower attended high school here before going on to college where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree from West Point Military Academy and then went on to become General George Patton's Chief of Staff during World War II Oakleys defiance against WWII led him into controversy

Firearms Hatmakers responded by producing even more colorful attire for these new customers (Moses). Ultimately though, most Gunowners stopped wearing Firearms Hats around 1950 because they no longer resembled military uniforms (Heiser).
