The history of firearms in Oakley, California begins with the Gunfighters of 1849. The first recorded reference to a firearm being used in this area occurred on September 25, 1849 when Deputy Sheriff John Wojtaszek shot and killed three outlaws while on horseback. The start of gunrunning and outlaw activity in the area was directly related to the ongoing Mexican-American War. Ulysses S. Grant was president at the time and his policies changed significantly the following year when he ordered military troops into California. This led to increased violence throughout the state, which included shootings by natives and Californians using firearms for protection. Prior to 1850 there were no public records or lawsuits involving firearms in this area. However, on October 3rd of that year, A Real Estate Agent named Jno Baptista purchased land at 9th & G Streets east of present day Oakley High School from James Bowie and opened what is now known as Baptiste’s Brewery which brewed beer for local residents until 1907. In 1851 Captain George Armstrong started operating an inn called The Eagle at 2nd & G Streets which served as a stopping point for travelers heading westbound across central California along what is now I-580 between Sacramento and Mammoth Lakes. This location was also home to Armstrong’s store which housed shotguns, rifles, ammunition and other assorted items necessary for ranching purposes. It should be noted that Armstrong never actually owned any firearms himself; rather he rented them out through his business partner Capt Tom Brady who did so until 1861 when Brady became sheriff of Placer County after Ulysses S Grant’s death leaving office. Oakley is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. It was founded in 1853 by John W. Neely and his wife, Catherine, on a bluff overlooking the Sacramento River. The town was named after Sir James Oakley, 1st Baronet (1805-1873), an English gentleman who had been born in America and had become a naturalized citizen. The townsite was surveyed in 1854 by Captain George Wagstaff of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and named for him because he had invested money in its development. In 1865, when California became a state, Oakley's post office became Contra Costa County's first county seat. In 1902, the town voted to adopt an ordinance allowing women to vote; it did so six years later. In 1933, Oakley voters passed an ordinance establishing a waterworks system that would provide drinking water to the community for the first time. In 1938, Oakleys firefighting department became one of only two departments in California with both hose teams and ALS equipment (laboratory support equipment). The department continued to grow as more businesses opened up within Oakleys boundaries and as new streets were built nearby such as Addison Avenue and Shasta Boulevard; such growth contributed significantly to Oakleys current population of around 500 residents. On July 17th 1944 at about 10:00pm local time during World War II an American B-29 bomber crash landed at RAF Fylingdales after losing altitude over England due to engine failure en route from Japan back home; this event is now known as "The Night Of The long Knives". After safely landing on what is now Airport Road east of town center just south of Interstate 5 there were no reported injuries or damage however all weapons aboard crashed unharmed into some nearby trees which remain today visible from I-5 northbound lanes near milepost 24
