This event became known as the “Gas Station Massacre” because it led to a shift in how guns were used within the city limits. The 1920s saw an increase in crime within the city limits due to Prohibition-era racism and prejudice against Mexicans. As a result, law enforcement began using more shotguns and rifles instead of handguns for fear that these weapons might be used against innocent civilians rather than criminals. This shift also led to an increase in bullets being fired into populated areas within the citylimits; thiseventbecameknownasthe“Bullet Corridor War” because it left several residents dead each year from gunshot wounds inflicted by government agents or criminals alike. Oakley was incorporated on November 3, 1872. It became an unincorporated community on May 12 of that year. The first post office opened in Oakley on December 2, 1872. The town site was surveyed by George Haddad and named for Sir John Alderney (1768-1834), 1st Baronet Alderney who had bought Rancho San Francisco de Asís from José Joaquin Murillo on February 17, 1821. On October 14 of that year Haddad sold the land to James Boice and Benjamin Wickersham for $2 per acre. At the time it covered . The first house built in what is now Oakley was a two story adobe with a gable roof and a low pedimented hood window typical of Mexicanadobe architecture. It was built about 1850 by Captain Augustus Calkins who also operated an stagecoach line between Oakland and Stockton via Pleasanton and Redwood City.. In 1865 Captain Calkins married Maria Echeverria from San Francisco de Asís and they moved into this house until her death in 1928. Their son Antonio Calkins also lived here until his death in 1984; their daughter Leticia married Charles Fenton Jr., owner of the Fenton-Foley Hardware Store located next door to their home from 1957 until his death in 1990.) Heinrich Ruppert erected one of the most visible buildings in town early 19th century when he began construction of his brick building known as "the Bank". The population of Oakleys peaked at over 10,000 in the 1940s but has since declined slightly to around 7,000 today. TheOakleys are descendants of George W. Oakley and his wife Emma who founded the community of Oakley on May 20th 1891. They were originally from Kentucky and came to California as pioneers to find new land for themselves and their families. Mr. and Mrs. Oakley were both natives of Clermont County, Ohio where they had both grown up before moving to Kentucky with their children Donald (1881-1964) and Nellie (1883-1970). Donald enlisted in the United States Military during World War I and was killed fighting at Surinam while serving as an officer with Company K2/442st Infantry Battalion Arkansas Regiment; Nellie worked as a waitress until she married Donald on December 10th 1919 when he was twenty-six years old; they had two children: Anna Lillian (1921-2010) who married Air Force Colonel Dean Stockdale II (1925-2002) after working together at Lockheed Martin Inc.;and John Wesley (born 1924), an artist who lives now in Phoenix AZ Donald & Nellie's death left four daughters - Dorothy Clayton Roberts Elmira Elizabeth Jane Willa Lynn - each one took care of her mother & siblings until Dorothy died aged 98 years old on October 16th 2004 Anna Lillian’s husband Air Force Colonel Dean Stockdale II she met while working at Lockheed Martin Inc.,the couple honeymooned at Palm Springs then lived together thereafter at Wright State AFB OH before getting divorced in 2002 when he retired from the Air Force John Wesley’s widowed mother Lois Washery raised him until he turned eighteen months old which is when she moved out west with her kids to become an artist herself
