Theyyer noted that there was a grove of trees near the present day corner of Third Street and Richardson Avenue. A later report from Father Junipero Serra noted that “a great many men build huts hereabouts” because of the abundance of acorns which had been discovered in these hillsides by him while exploring Mission San Francisco de Asís area in 1835. Father Junipero Serra's diary entry for November 11, 1836 states: "We found several large trees full of good apples". In 1837 an American named George Higginson landed at Alameda Point on July 24 with his shipmates Commodore Perry, Captain John Latham and Lieutenant George Vancouver when they sailed into Golden Gate Harbour pursuant to Ulysses S Grant's order following his successful Overland Expedition against Mexico in 1846-47. He disembarked his passengers including Captains Lorenzo75 Hidalgo y Costilla who had been leading troops destined for Mexican service under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna On September 2nd 1840 Californian pioneers David Dudley Edwards and wife Jane arrived at Alameda Point after spending three weeks traveling down the coast from points northward along today's Interstate 80 via Hwy 1010 about 26 miles south of Oakland Executive Airport now known as Jack London Regional Airport . The Mexican government granted Rancho Las Cienegas to Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1846, but never built anything on it. In 1876, after gold was discovered in nearby Tulare County, General John Brougham ordered his army to burn down all of theadobe dwellings near Mokelumne Hill (now downtown Fresno) because they were thought to contain treasure hidden among the redwoods. This incident remains one of Fresno's most famous landmarks and an important part of its local history. In 1912, William Denny founded the Denny Aircraft Manufacturing Company here with three employees and a $5 million investment from Ewing Kellett Sr., founder of Kellett Airways.
