However, there has been some resurgence over the past few years with restaurants like Mission Chinese Food opening up along Interstate 880 from Chinatown to Westgate Center mall; light industrial business moving back into sections such as Jack London Square; new housing developments going up around Lake Merritt; new businesses being launched such as StartUpSF; and music venues like Independent Living Artspace starting up again (due to paucity of space). Oakland, California is a city located in the East Bay region of Northern California. The city proper has a population of over 210,000 as of 2014 and is the second most populous in San Francisco County after San Jose. Oakland was founded by the Chinese in 1871 as an agricultural settlement on an area now known as Yerba Buena Island. The name "Oakland" sprang from theoak tree found there. The first European to see what looked like inland San Francisco was Lt. John Fitch on August 9, 1769 during his mapping expedition along with Lt. Junípero Serra and Captn Edward Jones Jr.. They named it Fuego because of its excessive heat – it had been surveyed only for pirates and not for Europeans! After weeks of exploration they found no natural site to build a fort at but instead named their new location Fort Point after Commodore James Cook's vessel HMS Discovery which had landed on Yerba Buena Island on September 7, 1769 during his circumnavigation of North America. In 1835, when Alameda became part of Santa Clara County, Oakland became part of that county also. It remained part of Santa Clara County until May 1, 1850 when it became part of Alameda County through Proposition 8 (the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution). On October 5, 1846 Charles Benton chose what is now downtown Oakland from rural Rossville Township for what would become one of the largest land acquisitions in history - he bought 4 square miles (10 km2) from Nicholas Stockton for $1 million! He formed The Central Pacific Railroad company and soon built up this area into one continuous town with plazas lining each side streets grid-wise deep into newly developed neighborhoods! Downtown Oakland contained some 300 stores/factories/houses before incorporation as a city! On November 16th 1856 City Council voted 6-3 to change its name to "Oakland" after then-President James K Polk's dramatic speech at Howard University in Philadelphia advocating hard labor among American farmers under conditions set by President Polk himself!: "If you desire Equality and A Better Future - throw off your shackles!" This event helped spur more businesses downtown and led to more housing developments such as Jack London Square later on. On December 3rd1856 Daniel Webster called upon citizens throughout the east coast to gather at Harrisonburg Junction near Richmond Virginia "...to show our country that we are still attached to her by tie which has never been broken." Mr Webster then proposed Resolution 235 proposing that America create a commission chaired by Vice President John Quincy Adams "...to explore all reasonable means for preserving our Union." On January 2nd1857 Resolution 236 was passed naming Chinatown Provisional District No 1 consisting mainlyof Japanese Americans living within walking or driving distanceof various business districts including Jack London Square; thus creating much future neighborhood current day Chinatowns around Telegraph Avenue etc.,the first successful effort by whites outside New York City Harbor to create cohesive Asian American neighborhoods within commuting distance
The first Europeans to arrive in Oakland were the Spanish in 1792. In 1847, the United States acquired California from Mexico and annexed it as part of the new nation. The city was named after President George Washington's home state of Virginia, but it was formally incorporated as a city on March 5, 1851. The population of Oakland increased rapidly during the early years of its incorporation and reached 1,500 people by 1860. However, growth slowed thereafter and the city remained mostly small until the late 19th century when various waves of immigration transformed Oakland into one of America's largest cities.
