The Oakland Pistol Club was founded on December 3, 1892. They were the first handgun club in Oakland. The club's first president was William H. Hayward. On February 14, 1899, the club changed its name to the American Rifle and Pistol Club of Oakland. The club met on March 9th at City Hall to take action against proposed city ordinance that would have banned handguns from being sold or given away without a license from the city police department. The meeting resulted in a victory for the club and helped to spur further gun control efforts in Oakland over the next several years
Oakland, California is a city located in the East Bay region of Northern California. The population was 86,794 as of the 2010 census. Oakland has been called "the most diverse and ethnically rich city in America" by Forbes magazine. It is also home to the largest African American community in North America. The city was founded in 1847 by Captain John Brougham and General James Fenton as a small clearing on an Island in Lake Merritt. The island had been purchased from the Native Americans by Auguste Chouteau for $100.Brougham named Oakland after his friend and mentor, Sir George Oakley, Bart., who served as Governor of British Columbia between 1849-1853. According to the US Census Bureau, Oakland's total area is 571 square miles (1,500 km²). It borders Richmond County to the east; Contra Costa County to the west; Alameda County to the north (including Berkeley); and San Francisco Bay Bridge District to the south. The first people living here were Coast Miwok Indians who lived near what is now downtown Oakland from before 8200 BC according to archeological evidence found at Three Rivers Ranch Site #2 . In 1778 Spanish traders arrived on horseback through what is now Downtown Oakland during Juan Bautista de Anza's First Mission Expedition looking for new land grants along with horses and mules which they thought would provide easy transportation overland across difficult terrain grants that would be available only after they had explored all of California A survey made during Commander William Richardson's expedition led by Lieutenant John Butterfield landed party including three Californians on June 25th 1776near present day Broadway & Telegraph Avenueand named it rangera' or Landing Place because no one knew where it was situated although probably off shore due north near Albany or North Point next ashore about 12 Miles long & wide reaching into San Francisco Bay ! During World War II, Oakland played an important role within United States military efforts due to its location at the mouth of The Bay Bridge across San Francisco Bay. As Japan began hostilities against America by invading Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, American forces responded quickly by launching Operation Neptune's Spear – an amphibious assault that successfully destroyed Japanese assets deep inside Japan -thus helping secure America's victory over Japan at war’s end. Many veterans from World War II are buried or memorialized throughout Oakland including General Joseph McNamara (Ret.), Commander of US Forces Pacific Ocean; Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz (Ret.), Commandant Retired Naval Academy graduate who served during WWII aboard USS Long Beach (CA-12); Lieutenant Colonel James Kappler (ASU), co-founder of Humboldt State University; Captain William Bouchard (USAF) – one half ownerof Boeing Aircraft Co.; Major General Leslie Groves III – Adjutant General for Army Combat units/Headquarters Third Army Group Headquarters/ stationed at Fort Meade Maryland during WWII; Captain John Fenton – UPI photographer who documented events leading up to Pearl Harbor attack

The area now includes parts of Berkeley, Emeryville, and Alameda counties. In 1868, the city became an independent republic under the leadership of Governor Aaron Burr. It was annexed by Berkeley in 1878.
