Oakland, California is located in Northern California on the east side of San Francisco Bay. It was founded by the Spanish in 1776 as Rancho Cañon de la Faja. The area now comprising Oakland was part of Alameda County until 1892 when it became part of Contra Costa County. It is home to more than a million people and is the most populous city in Northern California. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oakland were traders and missionaries who sailed up the San Francisco Bay in vessels called "Fortunato" and "Lobos." They named their new settlement Point Reyes after Nicholas-Jacques Conte, master mariner for Spain at Manila Bay. In 1836, Mayor John Fenton bought two small parcels of land from José María Arguelles for $2,000. The site that would become downtown Oakland was eventually chosen as its location because of its strategic location between two major water routes: San Francisco Bay on the west and Sacramento River on the east.
Oakland was founded in 1847 by brothers Ishmael and Elijah Barnes as a trading post on the Oakland Peninsula. It became an agricultural center during the Gold Rush, and was known as "The City of the Saints" for its religious fervor. In 1868, it became the capital of California after Calafia was granted to Mexico by President Ulysses S. Grant. The city's demographics quickly changed when waves of immigrants arrived from Asia, Europe and Latin America in the late 19th century. During this time, Oakland also saw significant growth in its African American population. In 1951, Mayor George Kelling designated Oakland as one of six merged cities forming The City of Berkeley. In 1976, Berkeley separated from Oakland to become its own municipality.
