Oakland, California is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 821,822 as of July 1,2015. Oakland was founded in 1847 by James Forbes and Dr. William Brownlow and it became a city on April 4,1967. It has been the site of many important events in its history including the Black Panther Party's 1968 United Front for Peace and Justice meeting at University Resource Center, the 1971 Uprising against police brutality led by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, and theoakland independence referendum held on November 3rd, 1979. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oakland were Jedediah Smith and his party of nine men who passed through from Fillmore Country on their way to found Sacramento in 1827. They named their new settlement after HMS Beagle's captain John Cranch (1785-1836), which had visited that area earlier that year along with Lieutenant George Vancouver. In 1838 American fur trader Donald McKay built his first house at Jack London Square near Lake Merritt. In 1846 another American Fur Company trader, Andrew Johnson (), located a post office at Jack London Square; this became Jack London Jr.'s square later renamed Jackson Square by him in honor of General Grant's successful campaign against Tecumseh during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The cornerstone for Jack London Jr.'s building was laid on October 12th, 1849 by his son-in-law John Sutter (). On March 25th/26th of 1850 Samuel Morse sent an eleventh mile cablegram from Easton to Sacramento reporting discovered gold near Stockton east of San Pablo Creek (). This event helped stimulate exploration throughout California with various mining companies starting up throughout those years including Gold Rush Mining Company (founded 1861) which produced over $2 million worth of gold between 1861-1865; Comstock Lode Mines & Metal Works (founded 1865) which mined copper parallel to Yosemite National Park until 1904 when it merged with Consolidated Copper Mines ); North Coast Minerals Company ("Namenberg"), also started up here around this time producing lead ore (); but it wasn't until 1863 when Swedish immigrant Anders Celsius set up Colusa Mines & smelters there () that significantmining took place hereabouts In 1851 James Forbes bought 60 acres northward just beyond present day MacArthur Boulevard from Robert Hutton (); he used this land to build what would become known as oriental district or "the Foothills" due to its high altitude (). At this time there were no street names within reach so residents simply called their area "the district". Two years later Forbes sold additional land northeastward extending his original dominion all the way down College Avenue into what is now downtown Berkeley ()) . In 1865 Pacific Gas Light Co., successors to Western Union Telegraph Corporation applied for electric light service also failing because they did not yet have power ).. After several more attempts various small towns began getting electricity starting with West Berkeley Municipal Employees Association Electrification Project #1 (started December 15th 1865) before finally getting full electric service January 1st 1886 [] With rapid growth came heavy pollution caused by numerous industries such as paper mills,, iron works etc.: Oakland saw its highest levels of air quality index ever recorded on August 14th 1921 while burning oil Refineries escaped without any negative consequences however nearby Livermore Air Force Base experienced severe chemical burns ]. However overall progress continued even as industry shifted away from agriculture towards manufacturing beginning around 1945 ]) By 1933 only about one third remained open employing 650 workers making Oakland homeostatically one third smaller than it had been] In 1951 City Council voted 9 – 1 approval for redevelopment plan recommendations submitted by Planning Commission .)
