Famed miner John Sutter arrived in 1855 to find no viable goldfields but renamed his property "Sutro" forelander Joseph Sutter (1798–1868). In 1860–61, construction began on what would become downtown Oakland; this was followed by plans to build an express way into town from Fremont via Broadway (then called Harrison Street) which would have linked downtown with new commercial areas around Lake Merritt and Interstate 580 eastward into Silicon Valley
In 1824, the first permanent settlers in Oakland established a small village on the north bank of the San Francisco Bay. The village was named for Captain John Fitch, who had founded Stockton, California in 1827. In 1847, two years after Gold Rush fever swept through the region and destroyed most of its population, Oakland was granted city status.
