Oakland, California is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The city was founded on December 12, 1847, by a group of entrepreneurs led by Captain John F. Brown. The first post office in Oakland opened in 1850. The name "Oakland" comes from theoak trees which grow near the site of the original townsite. In 1868, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill and over time became an important industry for Oakland. By 1892, there were more than 200 businesses in downtown Oakland employing over 4,000 people. In 1901, Oakland merged with its neighbor Berkeley to form what is now known as San Francisco County. During World War II, Oakland played an important role as a military base and also served as one of the largest ports on the West Coast for goods trade with Japan and other Pacific Rim countries. Today, Oakland remains a vibrant community with strong cultural attractions including many museums and performing arts venues such as Performing Arts Center (PAC), NBA's Golden State Warriors (GSW) and Raiders (Rams).
