Oakdale is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 2,505 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sierra Nevada foothills region. Oakdale is located on the eastern edge of Mono Lake and its ZIP code is 93634. The name "Oakdale" first appeared in 1868 when John Cook founded a post office there with that name. By 1892, it had been shortened to "Oakdale". The present-day town was platted in 1870 by Drury and Atherton as part of what would become Mono County. Early settlers were farmers who grew grapes and other crops; later they transitioned to cattle ranching and manufacturing. The first school in Oakdale was built on the east side of the lake in 1871 by Mrs. Pemberton (Hannah Pemberton). That year also saw the opening of miles-long Railroad Road from Needles to Mono City, which facilitated trade between Oakdale and surrounding communities. The townsite was named for General James Ladd (1810–1875), who fought for Mexico during their war for independence from Spain. After serving as governor of California from 1861 to 1865, Ladd moved his family to Inyo County in 1865 and started a lumber business here that prospered until his death two years later at age 73%. In 1901, local physician Samuel Gompers established an obstetric clinic here that became one of Northern California's leading clinics before merging with Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in 1964. Today Oakdale's only hospital is Gompers Memorial Hospital - one of only a few comprehensive hospitals within 25 miles (40 kilometers) of most residents - providing care for patients ranging from childbirth through heart disease and cancer; however all major medical services are now provided by Southern California hospitals or by private healthcare providers outside Ofcetime Orange County limits
