Oakdale is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sierra National Forest. The first permanent settler in what is now Oakdale was George Hargrave, who arrived in 1848 from Connecticut. A post office called "Hargrave" was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1860. A United States Post Office named "Oakdale" was established at the corner of Third Street and Academy Road on December 15, 1861, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on March 25, 1865. In 1872 John Sutter founded the townsite of Oakdale at an elevation of 910 feet (310 m). He named it after his birthplace of Oak Dale, Massachusetts. Homes were built by settlers around this time including those who had come to try to find a better life outside the harsher conditions experienced during Gold Rush times. By 1880 there were over 200 homes in Oakdale with a population of 350 people living mostly within two blocks of each other on Academy Road and Third Street. A school was built for students from rural Inyo County during this time which offered instruction as well as supplies and services needed for farming families such as water pumps and barns; these schools are still functioning today.
