By 1973, there were over 1,000 homes available in the "Valley". During World War II (1939-1945), many businesses moved to Oakdale from other parts of Kern County due to shortages of munitions resources so that local residents could get paid their share of war wages without leaving their home communities. Some notable businesses that relocated to Oakdale during wartime include American Fertilizer Company (AFC) which built a plant on Agricultural Road; Consolidated Cannery (CCC) which opened up on Compton Boulevard; Allied Signal Corporation (ASI) which built antennas on top of hills near Highway 149; Dodge Truck dealership on Hwy 101; Gillespie Tire company building at intersection off Highway 149 - all these companies booked room space at various locals' homes until they could be evacuated when hostilities ended. Today's most visible reminder of wartime activity inOakdale is Dodge Truck dealership where four large concrete drums are still standing today showing how much business was conducted here during World War II
