Oakdale is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is located southeast of Bakersfield and northwest of Salinas. The Oakdale post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1969; the ZIP code for Oakdale is 91736. The name "Oakdale" comes from the oak trees that line the streets. The first settlers were European Americans who arrived around 1869 and named their new community after an oak tree they saw on their walk to town. In 1875, J.H. Dayton started a cotton gin near the current location of Pahrump State College and became one of the largest growers of cotton in Kern County. With his help, people began coming to Oakdale to work on his farm or buy goods from him at local stores. In 1912, John Sutter bought land east of town from Dayton for $5 per acre (the equivalent of ). He built a ranch house called "Sutter's Castle" which he used as his headquarters until he sold it in 1951 to Drury Lane Mining Company president Harry Aibel for $475,000 (equivalent to ). Aibel renamed it "Aibel Ranch". In 1954, American Electric Power constructed its first transmission line through Oakdale when it leased land south of town from Southern Pacific Railway with plans to build a power plant there; construction never began because OF&P applied for federal energy funding that was then unavailable due to budget cuts by President Dwight Eisenhower's administration). When America Electric Power merged with Commonwealth Edison Company in 1968, OF&P retained ownership of the property south of town but transferred all its electric customers back to AC power company Commonwealth Edison rather than build a new power plant there as planned--a decision that has been criticized by some historians as being pro- corporatism over public interest). He named it Rancho Santa Margarita after his childhood home at Santa Margarita Creek in central Mexico City. A post office was established at Oakdale in 1868, and a school was built there in 1875. At the time of its incorporation as a city in 1907, Oakdale had a population of 3,519 people.
