Oakdale is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located near Modesto and Bakersfield. Oakdale was named after an old oak tree that stands on the town's square. The first post office in Oakdale was established in 1878. The original settlers were farmers who arrived from northern California during the Gold Rush era. In 1868, Isaac Newton married Mary Elizabeth Hickey and soon started farming in what would become Oakdale. By 1870, they had four children: John Newton (born December 15, 1868), Sarah Jane Newton (died young), Fanny Newton (1871-1971), and Isabella Newton (1875-1973). The Newtons were among the earliest residents of what is now known asOakdale Square. In 1876, Charles Augustus Townsend purchased 640 acres of land east of present day Oakdale Square from George Whitehead for $10 per acre ($ million today). After leasing it for several years he sold it to his brother-in-law Walter Prentice in 1880 for $15 per acre ($ million today). When Prentice died in 1886, his wife Lillie took over operations of the farmstead and continued to grow crops until her death in 1924. In 1902, Lillie's son Harry bought her share of the property back from her husband's widow and changed its name to Oaksboro Farmstead LLC after inheriting a tract of land next door from him which he also operated as a farmstead until his death in 1984. On January 1, 1941 when USPost Office No.: 9 opened at Oaksboro Farmstead LLC it became part of ZIP Code 95661 which served both towns until it closed on May 14th 1993 with all ZIP Codes being reclassified into one larger area code by then UPNumbering Corporation effective July 1st 1993 which merged all local government services into one unified agency called CALIFORNIA VALLEY TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION
