It was once the home of the largest arms manufacturer in America and one of the most important gun manufacturing centers in the country. The Oakdale Armory built by George W. Brown and Company at its current location on Elmwood Avenue between Elm and Maple Streets was opened on December 1, 1881. It manufactured rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers for both law enforcement and target shooting use until it closed in 1959. The Armory also produced parts for many other firearms manufacturers throughout its years of operation. The Arms Manufacturing Company was founded by George W. Brown in 1871 as a small family-owned business located near Stockton, California. Brown's company produced rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers for both law enforcement and target shooting use until it closed in 1959. Many of these products were used to create some of today's most popular firearms including the Glock handgun series as well as many other firearms made by various firearm manufacturers over the years.

In 1876, French-Canadian miner Leland Stanford bought property northeast of town for $15 per acre. With assistance from banker Elias Howe, Stanford began developing this land into what is now known as Silicon Valley. In 1902, he donated 1/3 mile (1 kilometer)of his oak trees to be planted at Valley High School; these trees still stand today as a symbol of Stanford University's commitment to education in the community. In 1948, Mayor Clarence Wigglesworth established what would become City Hall and requested that a park be created adjacent to City Hall which would serve as a public square for students and residents to gather together during open hours or use when necessary for municipal purposes such as firefighting or law enforcement activities. The Parkland subdivision was annexed into the city limits in 1951 upon its incorporation as a separate municipality with its own police department and street name changes (though it shares most basic civic amenities with Oakdale). The original name for the town was "El Sobrante". On December 12, 1924, voters approved a Measure Kchanging its name to Oakdale after Supervisor John Coyle's mother who had been born in El Sobrante and died there in 1907. A post office called "El Sobrante" opened on November 15, 1888, and closed on July 20, 1902. In 1911-12 two brothers named Edward & Harry Gordon operated a grocery store at 118th Ave and Castro Street near what is now BART Station (now Campos Union High School). They were later joined by their father who ran the store with assistance from his brother until his death in 1951 when it passed down to his son and daughter-in-law; they continued operation until 1978 when it went out of business due to changes in technology.; however they have left their mark on Oakland history by turning over items from their store - including an old redwood timber frame building currently used as storage space for an auto parts warehouse - into Museum Row House () at 10701 MacArthur Boulevard (near 34th Avenue), which opened to the public on October 25th 2014.. A second grocery store - this one called "The Grapes" - also operated briefly at 10825 MacArthur Boulevard before folding around 1957 because of low sales rates caused by drought conditions.. It's uncertain how long this building remained vacant but it has since been occupied bu scrap metal dealers making do with it while awaiting demolition or redevelopment.. In 1978 streetlights were placed along MacArthur Boulevard just south of where museum row house now stands... When new light poles were installed near 31st Avenue BART station RTD installed series 607 LED lights which could only be turned off if you touched them so someone had control over night life within 500 feet radius so these streetlights stayed lit throughout most of year even during Stanislaus county lockdowns
