It is located about 9 miles (15 km) northwest of Modesto and less than 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Stockton. The Oakdale post office opened in 1851, and was renamed for George A. Oakdale in 1880. In 1902, it became part of the Modesto Union School District. In 2006, the school district disbanded and all its land went to Oakdale Unified School District Inc., which also included East Bay Elementary School and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Middle/High School. Oakdale has a large forested area that includes oak trees and other hardwood trees dating back to the 1800s when much of this area was covered by redwoods nearby.
