Oakdale is a small town in central California, located about 20 miles east of San Francisco. The community was founded in 1887 by the Carpenters and Joiners' Union as a depot on the route between Sacramento and Yountville. In 1903, Oakdale became an independent municipality. It had a population of just over 1,000 people when it incorporated as a village in 1910. The first post office at Oakdale was opened on November 1, 1887. The name of the town originated from nearby Oak Valley Ranch where many trees were grown for lumber during the early years of the town's development. The first school in town was built on North Main Street in 1893. In 1909, Oakdale became an independent municipality and voted to become known as "Oakdale" rather than "Village." That same year saw the opening of Zion National Park which lay to the west of town when it was purchased by United States Army General John J Pershing for use as Camp Sherman during World War I. After World War II ended, much of Camp Sherman reverted back to civilian control and it no longer functioned as an army base but served instead as a popular tourist attraction until its closure in 1984-1985%. Today, most residents work within commuting distance outside of town while others commute into downtown Oakland or other large cities within easy driving distance. As a result, little evidence remains dating back to prior periods constituting eitherOakdale’s history or character; however there are some vestiges that suggest this rural outpost may have been quite different from what we know today due largely to its isolation from larger urban areas and relatively lack of infrastructure (roads, schools). One such example is evident within current day social media platforms which has led some locals to erroneously believe that they were not part of “the big city” until after incorporation – something that may actually have taken place more gradually even if physical infrastructure did not exist at this time!
