Oakdale was a small town in Kern County, California, located on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The population was 1,571 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Stockton. The first permanent settler in Oakdale was William Fenton, who arrived in 1855. He established a lumberyard and mill on the site of what is now the Mills School District campus. In 1859, Fenton married Eliza Barton and they moved to Sun Valley where they farmed and raised their children. In 1863, Elisha Bustamante settled in nearby Atherton and became one of its first residents. He built a log cabin near what is now downtown Oakdale and started trading goods with the local Native Americans. In 1865, two brothers named George and John Thornton came to Oakdale from Stockton with their families to homestead land around what is now Main Street. They founded Thornton Ranch which eventually included much of present-day townsite including Oakdale itself. The Torrances ran a mill here for many years until it closed in 1928 because of overuse by employees; however, some remaining evidence suggests that an early turbine-powered watermill operated here as well (note: this information comes from oral history taken by Leland Thurston). By 1870, there were only three houses remaining in town – all owned by individuals or groups of individual landowners – when state troops burned down one house during an uprising against Mexican rule that year. The next year saw another boom as oak timber production increased due to improved transportation facilities developed during the Gold Rush era; however, this also led to extensive deforestation which caused extensive soil loss – leading to potential land shortages that persist today."Kern County History - Oakdale" However, local farmers were able to exploit these new resources thanks to modern husbandry practices such as irrigation systems and crop rotation. With few other places left for settlers once production slowed downameliorated income concerns gradually drove many people out ofOakdale over time.
