Oakdale is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 10,585 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first people to live in Oakdale were the Ohlone Indians. They hunted and gathered plants and animals near present-day downtown Oakdale. The Mission San Francisco de los Padres sent Father Junipero Serra to convert them to Christianity in 1821. From 1827 until 1850, it was called "San Miguel", then "Dominguez". On February 14, 1853, oak trees were cut down by two men for firewood on Rancho Dos Pinos north of town. A local legend has it that one man started the fire while another ate some of the fruit from an oak tree that had been Cut down for Firewood! In 1875 a group of farmers led by Hormigueros settled around what is now downtown Oakdale when they purchase land from José Joaquin Morongo (1814-1892). They named their new community after Spanish Santísima Trinidad y Tabora (St Dominic) because of this period's religious fervor stoked by trips to Mexico City made by Morongo and his brother Don José de la Peña y Tabora during their missionary work in California. Morongo erected a small chapel on the east side of Main Street near where he plowed his fields during winter months; it became known as Our Lady's Chapel or simply "Chapel Hill". After him came many others who followed in his footsteps: Fathers Pedro Feliciano and Manuel García; Brothers Antonio Ramos and Lorenzo Monterey; Sisters Isabelita Castro Martinez and María del Carmen Alvarado (the latter also founded St John's School). A post office was established at Chapel Hill on July 11, 1870, under name Dos Pinos; it changed hands several times before becoming our current Oakdale Post Office on November 16th 1944. In 1916 there was a school built which still stands today - Mrs Beall Elementary School operated out of this building until 1984 when it moved into its current location across Forsyth Street from our old Methodist Church which once served as both Schools together! During World War II much activity took place here due to war production including munitions plants such as Solvay Arsenal & Munitions Plant #5 along with other nearby industries like Cosmopolitan Electrochemical Company plant #1 which manufactured aircraft components etc...
