Oakdale is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. The Oakdale National Historical Park is located in the town. It preserves oak trees and other historically significant objects from the early 20th century. The first firearms were made in Oakdale by husband-and-wife team of John Hargrave and Almira Atherton. In 1856 they built a mill on the edge of town to produce flour for Matson's delivery service to Southern California. In 1887, James Ellis homesteaded 640 acres (248 hectares) east of town on Ranchero Creek; this became known as "Ellis Ranch". Ellis also founded the city of Chico in 1912 after moving from his ranch there that year. The first handguns were made here in 1892 by Wm Sailsbury with assistance from Captain George Birdseye who had organized an armory and pistolsmith shop at nearby Bakersfield; these pistols were used by law enforcement officers until 1903 when they switched to revolver use. Other early weapons include shotguns and rifles designed by Jens Jensen including a Model T bolt action rifle which he developed into what is now called the Jensen Rifle

In 1928, Regency Park was leased to Hollywood studio executives for use as a movie set; however, no movies were ever made there due to budgetary constraints. In 1932–1933 two drifter planes used for aerial photography crashed into Winters Garden while approaching from Ontario Airport; they left behind large quantities of mud which still remains on site today as evidence of what happened that day.
