The first people to live in what is now Oakdale were Native Americans who came from Northern California overland during the 1820s and 1830s. They built a small village near Redwood Creek about two miles north of present-day Oakdale on Valentine's Day 1792. The village consisted of about 30 houses and was destroyed by fire that same year. In 1849, Captain George Gaspar Smith explored Rancho adobado (now Rancho Santa Cruz) in Walnut Creek Valley and discovered an area rich in mineral rights surrounding what would becomeOakdale. On February 3, 1850, invader José Corral purchase land from the Native American leader Chief Manuel Nieto for $1 per acre ($24 per km2). One year later on October 15, 1851, Mexico acquired Oregon Land Claim Number 8 from United States under Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo as part of larger Mexican annexation of California which also included parts of Contra Costa County. On November 5th 1861 General Ignacio Sequeira invaded Northern Californias portion then under US control including Walnut Creek Valley with intentions of seizing gold mines there but aborted his mission when he met Mexican forces at Sinkhole Canyon northeast of present day Oakdale. At this point most likely all but one family living in what are now Elmhurst Avenue streets east side lived adjacent to Sinkhole Canyon where Mexicans established their initial presenceumauding any attempt by Americans to develop or possess these lands . By 1865 all adult males living east side had left for various reasons (mainly because they could not support themselves while living next door to Mexicans). “The only thing remaining on our old rancho [Rancho Santa Cruz] were some scatteredadobe hills and some scattered oaks-all Judas Trees” – Mrs Rolfe remembered her father saying after the departure typical “We'd leave everything else behind except our memories” What remained became home to pioneers such as John Lomas (1835-1912), who emigrated with his parents Ceferro Lomas (1810-1885) & Maria Menendez de los Angeles y Ocampos (baptized December 12th 1837; died January 2nd 1912)[1] John married Emma Stevens on April 25th 1850 at Mission San Antonio de Asís just south of present day Fremont Street[2].
