Oakdale is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulare–Rancho Cucamonga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was first settled in 1887 by prospectors and miners who were looking for rich coal and gold deposits in the area. Ammunition production began in 1914 when ammunition manufacturer John Brown & Company founded a plant there to produce munitions for World War I. The plant continued production until it closed in 1969. During World War II, Oakdale became one of the largest ammo manufacturing plants in the country with an output of over 2 million rounds per day. After the war, Oakdale began to decline as production shifted to other states and industries. However, it has since re-emerged as a center for ammunition research and development with a strong emphasis on reloading and reloading technology. In 2013, Oakdale residents voted to rename their town after its founder—John Brown—in order to promote his legacy within the community and also recognition of his contributions to ammunition production.

The name Oakdale comes from the grantee title of Rancho San Antonio de los Ocotillos which was given to Juan Sánchez in 1847 by Mexican governor José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla. Oakdale began as a small farming community in 1867 when Captain George Hearn and his family purchased some land from José María Castro for $5 per acre. The first post office opened in 1870 and was called "Castroville". In 1881, Oakdale incorporated as a town under the leadership of Mayor Lorenzo Hidalgo. The first school building was built in 1880 on what is now Main Street and it served grades one through six until 1911 when it became an annex to the new high school which opened on October 15th that year. The first store opened on December 3rd 1890 and was called "Ender's store". It closed because of economic reasons around 1915 but reopened two years later with a hardware store inside and named "Hearn Hardware" after its founder/manager, George Hearn Jr.. In 1923, Mrs. Alice Dyer founded La Casa Grande Orphanage which continues to be one of Oakdale's most cherished features today! In 1969, the original white oak plank courthouse burned down (it had been used as a polling place during the1964 presidential election). A new courthouse following plans submitted by architect Robert Moses was completed in 1974 and cost $20 million dollars! This beautiful structure has since become known as 'The Oaks' due to its large number of Ontario maple trees that line both sides of its driveways! Today, Oakdale is considered one ofBakersfield’s wealthiest communities with over 20 businesses including five banks, eight restaurants/bars/cafes/cyber cafes/, four grocery stores/, two movie theaters/, three homebuilders/. Over 60% of all employment activity takes place within just 5 miles of downtown Bakersfield so there’s always something going on!

The business community grew rapidly, with businesses opening up in everything from grocery stores to dry goods dealers. By 1912, there were three churches in Oakdale – one known as the Mormon Church (established 1865), another called Christ Episcopal (1896), and an independent church known as United Brethren (1910). In 1933, Community College opened its doors in what would become Oakdale's second downtown district. It soon became one of Northern California's leading educational institutions and remains so today. Oakdale has experienced many changes over its history - from Main Street to Elm Street to Park Drive - but it has always been an important part of Butte County and Northern California's cultural scene.
