Oakdale has a long and diverse Ammo history. From the 1800s to present day, Oakdale has been an important ammunition production center for both hunting and target shooting. Ammunition production began in 1868 when J.B. Higgins founded the Higgins Gunnery Company in what is now Oakdale. The company produced firearms and ammunition until 1899 when it merged with Nesbitt & Sons munitions company, which became Ingersoll Rand Corporation. As Ingersoll Rand grew, it increasingly purchased other companies in the ammunition industry such as Browning Arms Company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company, Savage Arms Manufacturing Corporation and Remington Arms Company. In 1957, Ingersoll Rand merged with American Munitions Corporation to form ARCO Incorporated (later Arma Industries). The merger created one of the largest ammo companies in the world with operations throughout North America as well as Europe and Australia. At its peak in1991-1992, ARCO was responsible for manufacturing over three million rounds of all types of ammunition per day nationwide! Today, ARCO continues its tradition of innovation and excellence in Ammunition production by developing new products that make hunting or target shooting even more fun and exciting!

The Oakdale Ammunition Plant was founded in 1915 as the California ammunition company by Captain Charles W. Cook and his brother-in-law, George Dyer. The plant first produced small arms ammunition for the California Militia. In 1922, the company became a subsidiary of Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The plant became operational on May 1, 1915, when it was opened by Captain Cook with 8 guns and 100 rounds of ammunition. By 1925, the plant had been enlarged to 108 guns and 2 million rounds of ammo production capacity. In 1931, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company to form Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (Winchester). At that time, Winchester absorbed all other American firearms companies except Remington which formed its own company called Remington Rand Company (later part of Stevens & Hearst Corporation).

It is the county seat of Kern County and home to the University of California, Riverside. The community was founded in 1887 by farmers who had come from Gardena, California. The name Oakdale comes from an old Spanish word meaning "oak wood." In 1907 the first post office opened in the town. By 1912 there were 10 businesses in town with a total payroll of $10,000. In 1923 citrus fruit production began and soon Oakdale became known as one of the leading citrus towns in America. For many years it was also one of the most important farming communities in Kern County. Over time however, Oakdale's economy has changed dramatically due to its location close to major urban centers and its reliance on almond orchards for export income which have been slowly disappearing since 2000 when almonds went out of favor as world market prices increased around other crops such as wine grapes

Today, Oakdale is known for its unique architecture - including both original ranch houses dating back to the 1880s and more recent structures designed by architects such as Maynard Scott - as well as its wide variety of cultural experiences available through its various restaurants, theaters, arts organizations and shops. Additionally, it is home to numerous endangered species - including several bigamously married couples who live together atop an old winery - which makes it one of few places in North America where you can see these creatures up close (and make some terrible jokes about them).
