In Novato, California, the oldest telescope in the United States was donated to the city by a group of businessmen in 1903. This large mirror allowed astronomers around the world to view distant galaxies with ease during that era! This generosity continued when Fosdick passed away in 1948; his family donations were turned into two 12-inch reflectors that are currently installed at UC Berkeley's Kitt Peak Observatory! These devices allow astronomers around the world access to some of our most high resolution images ever taken! Today, the city of Novato continues its support for science through its own array of telescopes including: The Samuel Morse Telescope Museum (1838), The Gashouse Telescope (1838), The Peale Reflector (1878), The Harry Emerson Fosdick Mirror Telescope(1924), Kitt Peak Observatory(2008), and UC Berkeley's Two 12 Inch Reflectors(2012). Novato is a city in Marin County, California. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, east of Sausalito and north of Tiburon. The first Europeans to visit Novato were members of the Spanish Mission Santa Clara de Asís in 1777. The town was founded by Captain James Cook in 1824 as Rancho Novato. In 1851, it became part of Marin County when it was organized from parts of Sonoma and Marin counties. The next year, the county seat was moved from Sausalito to Novato. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established U.S Naval Station Novato which included land adjacent to present-day Novato (the station had been built earlier on what is now Marina Boulevard). USS "Hancock" served as the naval base until 1944 when it closed down at Alameda Naval Base due to World War II military needs there. On July 16, 1969, Mayor George Christopher made history by becoming only the second person ever elected mayor of a city with fewer than 500 residents (the other being Jack London). On November 1st that year voters passed an election ordinance establishing a charter school system within the city limits and setting aside $2 million for its construction over five years guaranteed by bond issues passed during that same election cycle; this allowed for high school students in grades 6 through 8 to attend schools outside their home communities even if their parents could not afford them (a similar ordinance had been passed just two weeks earlier for elementary students). In 1851, they built a sawmill on the banks of the river and soon began producing lumber for shipbuilding in Bay City and other ports along the Pacific Coast. By 1865, Novato had become an important center for transportation on the Central Valley Railroad network. With its strategic location at the mouth of Donner Creek (now called Donner Lake) - just east of Interstate 80 - it became an important stop for travelers heading to Sacramento or points northward before turning inland towards San Francisco or Angel Falls on Highway 1A (now State Route 128).
