Novato is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 26,711 at the 2000 census. It is located south of San Francisco and east of Sausalito on the San Andreas Fault. The Mission Santa Clara de Asis School District (owned by the Roman Catholic Church) is one of the largest school districts in California. On October 3, 1860 a post office called "Newvalencia" was established in response to petitions from residents asking for an outpost near Carquinez Strait due to ships being forced past Point Reyes Peninsula onto San Pablo Bay via that route en route from Oakland across Silicon Valley; this spot became known as North Beach after new Vallejo Lots were developed there around 1880-1882). When gold was discovered nearby at Sutter’s Mill (now Sacramento), many people poured into Novato to find treasure but no one lived there long because so few Andalusians had followedcue Elihu Burritt who purchased property northeast of downtown from Captain James Cook on September 10th1851 For three years Burritt ran an ad campaign “ selling country homes where you can see gold fields all around you ” This led to 3 shipments totaling 5 tons (~2700 US dollars) worth Of dredged material that moved upslope between missions over approximately 7 miles starting February 25th1855 finally finding payable grade sands near modern-day Redwood Shores , just south of Interstate 280 A short distance away lay muden hills covered in shales estimated at 100 feet thick containing coalbeds dating back 2 million years old giving hope that this might be another age old discovery like those made by Solomon ibn Ebrahem about 120 miles west at Madera Creek Samuel Oppenheimer collected sand and gravel from underneath these hills beginning November 9th1856 his company called Geology & Mining Company organized by his friend Cyrus Southworth Oppenheimer soon became one of largest mining operations ever conducted in America With production totaling over $1 million per week they produced more than double what any other operation during that decade By 1860 they had constructed a brick building northwest corner First Street & North Avenue now known as Geology Hall which served not only as their headquarters but also home to their library Open 24/7 for education classes until 1887 when Instruction moved permanently upstairs To date this building still stands todayoppenheimer Library continues today

It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and lies on both sides of Highway 1 between San Rafael and Cupertino. Novato's downtown core is a pedestrian-friendly area bounded byreet Avenue to the south, Winters Road to the east, and Russian Hill to the north. Novato began as a small farming settlement in 1879 on land that now includes most of what is today Novato. The town developed as a bedroom community for nearby San Rafael and Cupertino because of its close access to local transportation and its proximity to leading research institutions such as Stanford University and UC Berkeley. In 1966, when Interstate 80 was extended through Marin County, Novato became one of the first communities within the new highway district. In 1971, following approval from then-Governor George Deukmejian, Novato established itself as an independent city with full municipal powers under state law. In 1975, Novato annexed parts of unincorporated Santa Clara County to form a second urban area called South Mountain which had similar governing powers to that of City Hall; however South Mountain lost jurisdiction over schools and other civic functions after Santa Clara County passed legislation granting those powers back to Santa Clara County in 2006. In 2007–2008 voters passed Measure FF – also known as "Novato 2" – which increased business taxes by 3%. This measure was designed to fund infrastructure projects needed for growth in Novato such as widening streets and building more parking spaces along with increasing spending on public education initiatives like expanded learning opportunities for low-income children across all school districts in the city limits. That same year saw another referendum pass by voters authorizing $10 million per year in annual contributions from individual developers willing to build new housing units within City Limits; this money would be used specifically for infrastructure improvements within City Hall Park (the original location where Measure FF was first approved) including widened streets and better access for pedestrians/drivers via bike lanes/. On November 12th 2008 Mayor Greg Brockman announced plans for construction of an massive new shopping center located adjacent his old office park off Highways 1 & 5 just outside City Limits; this project is expected to create nearly 1000 jobs during its construction phase alone!
