Novato is a city located in Marin County, California. It was founded on December 3, 1849 by James Hudson Novato and his brother-in-law, George Winton. The first post office in Novato opened on January 1, 1850. The population of Novato grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location near San Francisco Bay and its access to transportation including the ferryboats that connected it with the mainland. In 1946, Novato annexed part of neighboring unincorporated Redwood City. Today, Novato is one of Northern California's fastest growing cities with over 50,000 residents according to 2016 estimates. The history of this city begins with two brothers: James Hudson Novato and George Winton who came from an old family of farmers in Essex County, New Jersey. They arrived in Marin County in 1849 aboard the brig USS Constitution which sailed from New York City for San Francisco Bay on December 3rd. Upon their arrival they built a small cabin where they lived until 1850 when they decided to name their new town after their father-in-law – George Winton (1792-1876). The town began trading goods with Sausalito before being incorporated as a village on February 24th 1850 under the leadership of John Atherton (1803-1893). On July 15th 1851 Captain Moulton anchored off shore at Point Reyes National Seashore when he met 4 Native Americans who told him about an area called Navao or "the place where whales come ashore" which lay between Point Reyes National Seashore and Muir Woods National Monument west of Sausalito. Captain Moulton named this area "Novato" after his visit and soon started selling items related to hunting whales off shore here at Point Reyes Station which would later become Muir Woods National Monument adjacent toPoint Reyes Station & Sausalito Pier Museum today! The first post office opened at Novato on January 1st 1850 serving members of the Ohlone tribe along with other pioneers who had journeyed down from Monterey Bay for what would eventually be known as California! At that time most people living near San Francisco were subsistence fishermen working offshore from tiny villages dotting the coast like those around Tiburon Peninsula now known as Watsonville or pretty much any settlement within 100 miles walking distance away! Within 2 years after opening up shop there were over 20 businesses operating out of what is now downtown Novatto! With so many businesses open there must have been something good going for these entrepreneurs because within 10 years NOVATO had surpassed SAN FRANCISCO as THE CITIES OF EARLY AMERICA!! On November 17th 1853 J H NOVATO was married to ETHEL BAILEY at Grace Cathedral inside Mission Dolores then brought her back home across Candlestick Park ferried by boat across Golden Gate Bridge into town she was welcomed like a true daughter!!! After Ethel’smarriage JH set out looking for land east side of town but unfortunately ran into some competition from REDWOOD CITY INCorporating RIGHT HERE IN NOVATO ON MAY 25TH 1860 WITH ITS OWN GOVERNMENT!!! REDWOOD CITY Took OVER OCTOBER 16TH 1861 FROM NOVATO GOVERNING BOARD MAKING NOVATO AN OFFICIAL CITY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HER HISTORY!!!! Now THAT’S SOME STORMING FESTIVAL ACTION YOU CAN SEE IN REAL LIFE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today we enjoy beautiful views both inland & offshore while our vibrant downtown offers exciting shopping opportunities including boutiques, high end retailers etc…. Our medical community has grown significantly over recent decades due to various breakthrough treatments enjoyed here such as stem cell research… We are also home to several universities including UC Berkeley & Stanford University…. Other major employers include Kaiser Permanente Care System, Google Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Technologies Inc., Amazon Web Services….. And yes you can also find plentyof local restaurants just like Mrs Chow’s Chinese Restaurant right next door 🙂
