On May 12th, 1849—the day before Novato became an incorporated city—a group of 37 men under the leadership of John Fenton bought 2 acres (8 ha) near what is now downtown from Francis Parkman for $1 per acre (0·75 ha). They named their new settlement Fort Mason after General John Mason who had helped lead American forces against Mexico in1846 during The Mexican–American War that followed President Polk's proclamation that America would side with Mexico over Mexico's president Antonio López de Santa Anna y su ejército (López de Santa Anna et al.). This event became known as "The Day That Decided It". On July 15th 1861 – just days shy ofCalifornias admission into The United States as a state – settlers from Sebastopol moved into what is now east Novato and began building homes there; these people are sometimes referred to as "The First Setters."
