Gun targets have been a part of the landscape in Novato, California for over 100 years. The first target was created by George Washington in 1795 on the property of his friend Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1821, Fenton and Bryant shot at a large deer on private land owned by Mr. Haggerty. It was the first time anyone had fired shots at anything larger than an animal from a distance in Novato. The practice of shooting at targets began to grow more common, and there were several businesses that would allow customers to take aim at their property or employees when they got off work. By 1875, there were enough businesses in town that Target became an official business entity. The first building that housed Target opened its doors on Saturday mornings for business owners in 1886. The popularity of target shooting led to the development of shotgun shooting lanes and courses all throughout Novato County beginning around 1910. These courses allowed people to shoot shotguns without having to worry about hitting something important like people or animals; these lanes are still open today! In 1916, Target moved its operations out of town and into what is now known as the Ted Williams Center (now called Regency Ballroom). This location allowed them to continue selling products and services while also allowing people access to beautiful scenery across town with ease. By 1970, it was announced thatTarget would close their doors for good due to poor sales conditions statewide but fortunately forNovato residents, they managed to keep their beloved store open until 1974! After Target closed down, many local businesses decided to start up their own stores all over town which helped bring traffic back into downtown Novato during those tough times! Today, target shooters from all over come together each year at the NRA National Shooting Championships held in nearby Paso Robles; this event is one of the biggest events in target shooting history! Novato, California is a city in Sonoma County, California. The population was 44,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sonoma County. The first permanent residents of Novato were Europeans who arrived during the 1849 Gold Rush. They built small huts on the present site of downtown in 1850 and named it "New Beginnings" because they believed that this was where San Francisco would be founded next. In 1858, local citizens voted to incorporate as a village and call it Novato. On July 2, 1860, a group of Gentlemen from Stockton (now called Modesto) issued an advertisement for land between Novato Creek and Gough Road to be used as part of their new town development project. On October 15th, 1860, the first building lot was sold at $1 per acre (this amount has not changed since). The original town hall was built on what is now First Street and Main Street in 1861-63 by local contractor Smedley Butler. In 1868-69 when gold seekers started arriving in large numbers following General William Tecumseh Sherman's Expedition into California searching foruggets worth millions of dollars each, most people thought that Novato would soon become one of the great American towns like Sacramento or Palo Alto because its location made it an important transportation hub for goods moving westward overland through these parts connecting mines with points northward along Interstate 5 and Highway 101. But no such luck; within months most everyone had left for greener pastures: gold seekers discovered rich but un prospected veins near Bodega Bay just south of town while other groups invaded centralCalifornia looking forilver deposits near Humboldt Bay which lay just north of Novato Harbor on Mare Island Naval Base - all before Decatur Avenue opened up to traffic! A few exceptions did stay: Jethro Gibbs & his brother Solomon became prosperous ranchers around Oak Knoll; George Hearst established himself as an official broker/brokerage business in town while continuing operations outfitting travelers via steamship from San Francisco Bay; construction began on what is now Santa Clara University campus east across Mare Island Naval Base - but when college students got antsy about not being able to attend classes due to lack of available room at Berkeley orOakland universities they decided to move away instead - until finally after World War II when many young Californians moved back into their home states due to high joblessness rates thereupon enterprising individuals bought up old homes throughout Northern California gradually restoring them liveable conditions thereby creating today's much desired "Old Town" feeling back again within even more recent buildings including some dating back 100 years! Today's vibrant downtown offers plenty shopping opportunities both online amp offline including top-notch boutiques such as H&M, Zara & Uniqlo; trendy restaurants such as Mamma Mia!, Alinea and Benares; family oriented services such as movie theaters (The Regal CinemaPlex across from downtown features multiplex movies beginning with Superman Returns Friday nights), bowling alleys (Citrus Bowl located off Third Street), ice cream shops (seven locations total), post offices (one location currently open), health clinics (including Kaiser Permanente Medical Center) and massive amounts cultural events happening year round including huge summer festivals like International Folkloric Music Festival held every June at Augsburg College & Wine Country Fairgrounds adjacent thereto attract hordesof music lovers international artists performing alongside hundredsOf curious onlookers annually during several weeks culminating with world class art exhibitions featuring select works from around the globe during monthly late night EVENTS dubbed “Festival Fridays” capped off by grand finale performances by major talent often ticketed well in advance allowing locals accessto experience world renowned event priorto general public viewings! On November 8, 1853, the first public meeting of the California State Legislature was held in Novato. The meeting began with a speech from Representative David Cameron. The purpose of the assembly was to establish a government for the territory. It did not meet again until 1863. In 1865, California became a part of the United States and on January 6, 1868, President Ulysses S. Grant issued an executive order creating the state of California as well as Nevada and Arizona. In 1872, Governor John Cranch vetoed a bill establishing Yosemite National Park because he thought that it would be too expensive to operate.
