Some of these areas include: downtown (the heart of the town), Paseo de la Reforma Boulevard/Foothill Road/Industrial Park Drive (an important business corridor), Southlake Center (home to Texas Instruments Inc.), Westpark Village (a mixed use development featuring retail shops, restaurants, offices), Northfield Commons (a shopping center complete with a movie theater), and Heinemann Place(a natural gas processing plant). In addition to its economic importance, Novato has also been home to numerous cultural events over the years including international music festivals such as Sonoma County Fairgrounds Jazz Festival in 2018 and2018 European Open Air Jazz Festivals held at various locations around town each summer since 2001 including at tennis stadiums in Livermore Valley

Novato is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Novato Peninsula and its sister cities are Petaluma and Sausalito. The first Europeans to visit Novato were Missionaries Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and Juan Bautista de Anza in 1769–70. They named the Bay of San Francisquito after St. Francis of Assisi, but little else is known about their visit. In 1825, John Cranch discovered oil shale near today's Novato while exploring for petroleum in northern California. He leased land from Mr. George Stephens which included present-day Novato and part of Petaluma Cove. Members of the Stephens family developed this oil shale into what became ChevronTexaco Oil Company's main headquarters until it moved to El Paso, Texas in 1978. Until 1863, most residents lived on small farms that grew vegetables or raised chickens; however, when General Ulysses S Grant ordered an attack against these southern Californian farmers during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), many men volunteered for military service and bought land north of San Francisco in order to avoid being drafted into the war effort. With industry expanding rapidly throughout Northern California during this time period as a result of new discoveries along Interstate 80 (later I-5), families began moving out of Novato altogether towards more metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. However, by 1920 most people living within five miles (8 km) of downtown had remained rural farmers or fishermen. By 1940 less than one percent of all housing units in Marin County were occupied by people other than farmers; however, almost two-thirds of all jobs within three miles (5 km) of downtown were done by people employed outside agriculture. As suburbanization spread across Northern California during the late 20th century with increasing auto production within five miles (8 km) radius periphery suburbs like Novato began to grow rapidly due to lack thereof public transportation options apart from buses running between downtowns – largely because developers could build highrise apartments without having to worry about how close they could get to any services or amenities needed for residents.Marin County History2010.
