In 1916 developer William Randolph Hearst purchased all but one acre (acres) of Rancho Niguel for $1 million making him owner/operator thereof until his death in 1951 . In 1919 after World War I Veterans Land Act gave veterans preference for property purchases within their home state , Hearst put together a group including banker Harold Wertheim and real estate developers Philip Johnson and Lewis Mumby who bought nearly two acres (acre) worth of land north east of Market Street for $10 thousand dollars This site now includes about 50 acres (km²) or 10%of downtown Novato where you can see many pieces from early 20th century San Francisco architecture like: First National Bank building; Masonic Temple; Chronicle Building; Examiner Building; School House No 2
