Norwalk is a city located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 54,491 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth largest city in San Mateo County and the second biggest city in Silicon Valley. The City of Norwalk was founded on April 12, 1853 by John H. Sloat and James G. Bligh as part of Rancho Palos Verdes Union Co., which would later become Pacific Bell Company's (PBC) Rancho Santa Clara property. Norwalk's history can be traced back to 1853 when John H. Sloat and James G. Bligh purchased land east of present-day downtown Norwalk from Francisco Marquez de Cordova y Costilla for $1,000 cash and 10 acres of land with water rights on it for future development into a town called Rancho Palos Verdes Union Co.. On July 15, 1861, the first post office opened in Norwalk with Wm Fenton serving as its first clerk/postmaster On December 6, 1862, ownership of Rancho Palos Verdes Union Co.'s lands passed from PBC to the United States Government under President Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order No. 6410 through an exchange between PBC trustee Isaac Newton Howe and Ulysses S Grant for 522 horse NVIDIA patent shares valued at $872 ($ when measured against current dollars). In 1863 Wm Fenton was replaced as postmaster by George Stephenson after Fenton refused to renew his lease on November 5th due to then-current US$2 per week rate for postal service at that time In 1865 A&P Railroad built a line from Los Altos to Redwood City - this line became known as "The Good Friday Rail Line" because it stopped at all of the local small towns along its route before crossing into Palo Alto County - this made Norwalking one of the most important cities in Northern California during this time period In 1870 Alfred Culp moved his grocery store from Berkeley down Market Street into what is now known as North Park Avenue - this store started out as simply a large barn which had been converted into a grocery store by entrepreneur Alfred Culp Sr.. In 1886 A&P Railroad rebuilt their old main line south from Redwood City overpassing North Park Avenue - they also built a new station at what is now University Avenue – making Norwalker once again one of Northern Californias' major cities In 1916 Mayor Edward J. Byrne formed city government; Norris Winton served as mayor until he resigned effective May 1st following indictment for bribery charges; Norris Winton's successor Clyde Davenport served until November 3rd upon Davenport's resignation due to federal corruption charges Davenport then appointed Harry Egan (who had earlier been involved with Byrne during his previous term) chairman of public works committee pending appointment of plumbing contractor Arthur Ashe Norman who would serve until January 1st 1927 when new mayoral regulations barred appointment or tenure without prior confirmation through Committee Hearings chaired by Mayor Harry Egan himself

Norwalk was founded on December 12, 1853, by Captain George Norwalk and his wife Esther. The town was named in honor of the daughter of Capt. John H. Norwalk, who had served in the Mexican-American War and as Postmaster General of California. The first settler to arrive in what is now Norwalk was Captain Robert Blyth. In 1865, Captain Julius Cushing arrived from San Francisco with a group of men to establish a post office and found an abandoned cabin known as the "Cushing Fort" in present day downtown Norwalk. In 1868, Colonel James Wolk built a sawmill on the south bank of the Anza River. This mill became one of the most important businesses in town and contributed greatly to its growth over the years. In 1875, Jonas Sutter came to town from Stockton with his family and began operating a flour mill on High Street. He also built a house which still stands today on Elm Street in downtownNorwich . The early 20th century was especially notable forNorwalk's involvement in World War I and World War II . As part of America's military effort during both wars,Norwalk played an important role by providing tooling, materials, labor and other support services to American manufacturers throughout California . During World War II ,Norwich residents served their country through service in both military campaigns (the Western Defense Campaign)andwartime housing shortages caused by rationing . Many local civilians also volunteered their time or resources to help out with war efforts such as collecting food supplies or gathering intelligence . After World War II ,Norwich experienced rapid growth due largely to its status as an agricultural center serving many nearby towns including Chowchilla Valley Rancho Ranchero
Norwalk was founded in 1865 by John Norris as a small town on the shores of Lake Elsinore. By 1875, the town had grown to include a sawmill, grist mill, and cotton gin. In 1916, Norwalk became an incorporated city. The city's first mayor was Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
