The Los Angeles metropolitan area has a total population of 3,815,769 according to the 2010 census. The history of Norwalk dates back to 1857 when three men known as "the fathers" founded what would become Norwalk. They were land speculators who bought some adobe for $4 per acre from Juan Crespí and Vicente Aguirre. In 1888, Captain John Sutter established the first post office in what is now Norwalk with mail delivery from San Diego via stagecoach services. In 1911, the town of Norwalk was incorporated as part of San Diego County. During World War I (1914-18), it became an important military base due to its strategic location on la Mesa Boulevard between Interstate 5 and US 101/Mt Carmel Road. In 1942, during World War II, Naval Station Seal Beach was moved from Long Beach to Seal Beach – then called Dana Point – adjacent toNorwalk; this led to the name change for that station which still stands today: Naval Station Orange County (now Huntington Beach).
