He named it Isla de las Fortunas (Island of Fortune). A mission called Nuestra Señora del Carmen was founded here by Father José Gomez on September 6, 1827. In 1868, Norwalk became an incorporated town with a population of 10 people. The first post office opened here on December 12, 1868. In 1904, Oscar Sánchez Carrera built him home and renamed it "El Rancho del Sol" after the sun that shone brightest in his garden there during summertime. Norwalk's downtown area was developed primarily as commercial and industrial areas beginning in the early 1920s when J P Morgan moved his company headquarters from Newark to Norwalk as part of its expansion into southern California following World War I. One of the first large-scale suburban developments located outside of Los Angeles began to form around this time with homes being built along El Camino Real near State Route 190 – now known as Lankershim Boulevard – which paralleled Interstate 10 east-west and north-south within walking distance for many working class Angelenos who could not afford or did not want to live outside their neighborhoods because they were considered “the lower classes” or “ Bonus Boys” brought over byurban renewal programs during the Great Depression era when public works projects were used to clean up inner city neighborhoods and create new jobs for working class Angelenos while also providing essential services like powerlines and water supplies for newly annexed rural areas east of Interstate 10

Norwalk is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1857 by Captain George Swain and his wife, Harriett Cutter. The first post office was established in Norwalk on November 10, 1857. The population of Norwalk was 2,815 at the 2000 census. The town has since grown to over 20,000 residents and it is the largest city within the San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. Norwalk's history can be traced back to its founding as a small ranch community located near Winchester and Fresno Counties in what is now Fresno County. In 1857, George Swain and his wife Harriett Cutter founded Norwalk after they decided to move from their home on a family-owned Rancho Seco farm in Kern County. They named their new settlement after Norwegians who had recently arrived in Southern California from Europe during the mid-19th century: "Norwalk" meant "New Norway." The Swains were among the earliest settlers in what would become one of California's most populous areas; by 1860, they had 4 children living with them: Lillie (born 1861), Seward (born 1863), George Atherton (born 1865), and Alice (born 1867). By 1870, theSwains had acquired additional land around their new colony and added another child to their brood; this addition would be Alice Hawthorne Swain Bartlett (1872–1948). One of America's first female reporters—and mother of two future Governors of California—Alice Hawthorne Swain Bartlett reported for her local paper while also working part-time as an actuary at City National Bank. The Bartlets left Norwalk for good before any other families did between 1870 and 1880 due to disease outbreaks which swept through much of southern California during that time period; however, some evidence suggests that they may have returned briefly during World War I when war production opportunities opened up across America. After leaving Norwalk behind, the Bartletts moved eastward into Amador County where they operated a dairy farm until 1925 when they sold it and settled down outside Sacramento about 25 miles west of downtown Sacramento. Thereafter until her death in 1948 Alice Hawthorne Swain Bartlett spent several years each year travelling throughout Northern Mexico visiting her grandmother who still lived thereon occasion before returning home for short periods during summers to live with her descendant Myron Haughton who ran a hotel near downtown Sacramento until his death in 1957.. In 1912 John Waddell became Norwalk’s first postmaster when he replaced James Fenton who resigned because he could not get assignments from New York City newspapers because those papers were only interested in stories about Los Angeles rather than about rural Californians such as himself.. Norwich grew rapidly due largely to two factors: its location adjacent to major agricultural markets both northward along Interstate 5 from Reno via Stockton past Modesto then eastward through Trinity Valley towards Sutterville then southward into Nevada along I-5) as well as its annexation by Fresno County following passage by state legislators of legislation establishing Fresno County Stadium on April 15th 1915 which coincided with concurrent football championship games being played nationally between USC Trojans and Boston College Eagles at Stanford Stadium’s newly built outfield grandstands just west of town center.. Norwegian immigrants arriving here circa 1850 found fertile farmland surrounding their isolated campsites stretching all along present day US Route 395A northwest out into Tehachapi Mountains eastwards towards Butte Meadows Reservoir & Mono Lake forming today’s North Hollywood Hills neighborhood including current day Redondo Beach – becoming one very important sectional connection between these mostly Anglo American communities hosting sizable Norwegian/ East European populations beginning early1900s thru 1930s filling many high priced jobs available here late1920sand early 1940 veteran farmers recruited WWII veterans displaced persons primarily Italians & Jews coming here thru “Ghetto Exclusion Act” signposted “No Irish Need Apply” . Some sources claim that approximately 60% or more norwegians settled here permanently starting prior to 1900 although exact figure cannot be verified without further research . Estimates put total number currently residing herein above 300K individuals making this one Of Californias Most Vibrant Communities spanning Century Since Settling Here
