Norwalk, California is a city in the San Bernardino County of California, United States. The population was 54,593 at the 2010 census. The original incorporated town was founded in 1879 by Captain John D. Sutter and his family as Rancho Norwalk. In 1906, it became part of Riverside County and then was annexed by San Bernardino County in 1912. It is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino National Forest and has a population density of . The first Europeans to visit Norwalk were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Gaspar de Portolà on June 16, 1542 when they explored what is now Orange County. On May 25, 1769 Don José Nieto established Mission Santa Ana de la Laguna on an island in the Salinas River near present-day Norwalk. Father Francisco Gomez organized a band of friars called "Los Alarcónes" to evangelize among the indigenous people there. Father Gomez had originally been sent from Spain to spread Catholicism through inland areas but he soon found that many people did not want to convert because they considered him enemies of Spain. After two years' missionary work among the local people, Gomez returned home with new information about how to make converts here so he started another mission outpost at Chino Hills (now Needles) on October 10, 1770 but this time only served Indians living east of Descanso Creek rather than those west of it who were already baptized Catholics under Spanish rule. A few months later Mexican forces destroyed both missions during a battle against Native Americans near what is now Redlands Boulevard in downtown Norwalk; all nine missionaries were killed except for Fray Antonio Lopez de Mendoza who managed to escape unharmed despite being surrounded and captured by Mexican forces. On February 14–15, 1879 Captain John Durnan Sutter arrived at Rancho Norwalk with his family after sailing downriver from Monterey Bay via Pismo Beach on their ship "Santa Fe". When they reached SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY they set up camp at Redwood Point north ofpresent-day North Hollywood while exploring some nearby valley floor properties which would eventually become Orinda and Morongo Valley townships; these explorations led them ultimately to settle in present-day Orange County as part of their ranching operation known as The Sutter Company (). They soon began trading goods with Mono Valley residents along what is now State Route 395 between Hereford Heights east of Corona del Oro Road (now Utopia Road) and today's Interstate 905 corridor just southwest of I-405 outside Irvine Meadows shopping center). After six years Governor Manuel Micheltorena appointed Captain James Wylie as surveyor general for Los Angeles District on November 1st 1887; captain Wylie surveyed most or all present day Riverside Counties including Norwalk
Norwalk was founded in 1887 by Dr. George Washington Copley and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the nearby Norwalk River, which means "laughing stream." In 1922, the town passed through a process of annexation by El Sobrante County, California.
