The first Europeans to visit what is now Kern County were Spanish missionaries in 1811 and 1814. A party led by Captain Gabriel Moraga explored the area near present-day Norco on September 8, 1817. They named the river San Jacinto after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army that had fought against Mexican forces at the Battle of Buena Vista on September 7, 1817. In 1862, Jameson Sayers donated land to build a water pipeline from downtown Bakersfield to east Kernville through Norco and other villages along its route. The town of Norco was founded on June 10, 1915 by Jens Jensen and his brother Ole Olsen as a result of this donation. At first it consisted of just a few homes; however, over time Norco grew rapidly because of its proximity to Bakersfield and its easy access to transportation including two bridges over San Jacinto River which connected Orcutt Creek with Elk Valley Creek near present-day Agoura Hills. In 1933 local farmers decided to plant daffodils in their fields as part of an effort to promote pollination for plants such as apples and oranges nearby in Central Valley towns like Fresno and Visalia. For more than 30 years they have continued this program despite occasional bitter cold temperatures that damage tomatoes or make flowers ineffective.
