Norco is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 20 miles north of Bakersfield on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The Norco Museum and Historical Society is a nonprofit educational organization that preserves Norco's history and "the living legacy of its citizens." The museum includes an open-air plaza with a recreated downtown street scene from the early 1900s; two old churches; a post office; four businesses dating back to 1881; and other artifacts from local history. In addition to exhibits on local history, culture, art, and Prescott Valley mining days, the museum has an extensive library with over 100 books on various topics related to Norco. Noroco first began as an agricultural community in 1909 when three families bought 160 acres (65 hectares) west of present-day Norco for $4 per acre ($/ha). They named their new village "Noroco," after nearby Needles Ranch which had been founded by George Custer in 1879. Other early settlers included Gershon Weisbach (1892-1975), who came from Germany with his family when he was just 16 years old and organized drives for crops in what is now Kern County. He also built one of the first irrigation systems in Kern County. The Weisbach family sold their land holdings in 1915 to John Ladd Sr., founder of Ladd ranches near Tulare and Madera Counties east of Fresno. Mr. Ladd operated several ranches including those along the Kern River until his death in 1941. In 1923 Irving Chubb started farming cattle near where Noroco now stands. In 1933 he donated 4,000 acres (1 kilometer²) around present day Norco to become part of what would become Kern County government under then Chief Deputy Sheriff Harry Elmer Dye Jr.. Dye served as county chairman from 1947 until his retirement in 1962…. A year later City Councilwoman Mildred French became mayor following runoff elections against incumbent Mayor Jack Haley…. French served as mayor until her resignation effective December 31st 1966 due to health problems….. Mrs French was succeeded by her son Allan French who served until 1984…. Mrs France's daughter Patrice Hale took over mayoral duties beginning February 1st 1985 thru January 15th 1992….. On October 2nd 1992 Mayor Patrice Hale resigned due to illness while pregnant…."
