Norco was founded in 1911 by John Norcross. The company grew rapidly and, in 1922, it became a subsidiary of Colt Firearms Corporation. In 1934, the Norco company merged with Browning Arms Company to form Browning-Norco Corporation. The company name was changed to Colt pistols in 1965. In 1938, the Norco corporation purchased Winchesters firearms division from Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After World War II, the Norco corporation shifted its products focus towards handguns and ammunition production. It closed its ammunition factory in 1987 and ceased handgun production in 1990. However, the firm continues to produce revolvers and other firearms under various brand names throughout California.

Norco, California is a small town in the San Bernardino County area of Southern California. It has a population of about 4,500 people and is located on the eastern edge of Riverside County. The name "Norco" comes from the Spanish word "norte" meaning "north" and "occo," meaning cattle or horse herders. The first settlers in this area were Mexican Americans who arrived during the 1820s. They used the name Rancho Norco to describe their land holdings. In 1887, John Cranch boughtrancho Noroco from its original owners and renamed it Norco after himself. Today, Norco's role as an agricultural center continues with ranching, farming, processing industries, and real estate development being some of its most important economic sectors. The history of Norco begins with Rancho San Bernardino which was established in 1825 by Juan Bautista del Valle and his wife María de la Luz Moriarty. The Valley was then divided among several families as part of an effort to create east-west transportation routes in southern California during what is known as the period of division (1824-1846). One group went to Rancho Los Angeles while another group moved westward to establish ranches at San Diego and Tulare counties (the precursor to Riverside County). After years of hard work, both groups achieved their goals; however, there were still many gaps in knowledge between them that needed to be filled before they could start sharing resources evenly. This lack of coordination led to tension and conflict which would continue until 1850 when Governor Manuel Micheltorena ordered all parties involved into peaceful arbitration under Ulysses S Grant’s guidance. From then on peace prevailed through cooperation between various groups who sharedcropped or grazed their lands according to their needs rather than depending on others for sustenance/supportive services such as irrigation systems or markets for goods produced on their properties. In 1907 two brothers named Harry Smith founded Harry Smith & Sons Grain Mill near downtown Noroco with initial investment totaling $2 million dollars (). A year later they merged with four other grain mills operating around southcentral California into one company called United States Mills Corporation (). The mill continued production until 1949 when it closed because OFA regulations changed that required all water rights within twenty miles be patented (). In addition, many local businesses such as lumberyards etc., closed down due primarily to rising costs associated with storage space required for increased output caused by changes in technology brought about by World War II(). However several local landmark buildings including USMILCO Tower (), Normandie Hotel (), Old Pulaski School () remain standing today testifying not onlyto the successof United States Mills but alsotoNoroco's continuing importance within Southern Californian agriculture
