In 1853, Norco was founded by Phineas Banning and Daniel Freeman. The town was named after the Norco River, which flows through it. In 1903, the town platted out a new area on the east side of the river, and in 1908 they added a street called Banning Boulevard. In 1911, they annexed the neighboring town of Hercules. Banning Boulevard is named after Phineas Banning, who donated land to make this street in Norco available for development. He also donated money to help build the first high school in Norco. The first building on Banning Boulevard was built in 1912 and is still used as a public school today. Banning Boulevard has been home to several businesses over the years including: A&W restaurant from 1914-1965; National Camera from 1965-1971; Gatto's Pizza from 1971-1979; Jonsey's Restaurant from 1979-1981; The Benares store from 1981-1985; KFC from 1985-1989; Belushi's Drive thru from 1989-1991; and Safeway store from 1991-1998. The Benares store closed down in 1998 but can still be seen inside of local history museum located on North Main Street between First Street and Second Street. It is now being used as an event center
