Norco, California is a small town in the southcentral San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Fresno and 40 miles (64 km) north of Stockton on I-5. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,512. The name "Norco" is an Italian word meaning "place where olive trees grow." The Norco cotton gin was built in 1872 by Don A.C. Norcross and his son George C. Norcross II to process bales of cotton that had been brought downriver from the Mexican state of Baja California by boatloads. The original facility was located on the banks of the Río San Joaquin just east of present-day Orcuttville, but it was destroyed by floodwaters in 1913. The Norcross family rebuilt it at their home on Main Street in 1922 and it became known as the Norcross Cotton Gin Museum & Library. In 1936, during World War II, local residents made supplies for General Patton's army and opened a post office called Patton Post Office to serve them; this name was changed to Patton Post Office soon after the war ended. In 1955, when Interstate 5 opened up through southern Fresno County and bypassed Norco, business owners decided to move their operations out of town so that they could be closer to freeway traffic and other amenities outside the community. However, many businesses remain in town today thanks to its easy access to highways I-5 and I-880
