The Newport Beach Museum of the American West has a large collection of scopes, including some from the 1800s. The museum’s first telescope was built in 1857 and is still on display. Many other early telescopes have been preserved at the museum, such as the 12-inch reflector used by John James Audubon in 1838. In 1896, a new telescope was built for use at Caltech Observatory. This telescope was called “Pine Island” after Pine Island Sound which it observed from. The observatory also acquired an 8-inch Dobsonian reflector in 1906 and a 10-inch Newtonian reflector in 1912. These telescopes are still on display at Caltech today. In 1923, two new scopes were built for use at Mt Wilson Observatory in California: the 1/2 inch mount Anker Hale Telescope and the 3/8 inch Mount Wilson Camera. Both these scopes are still on display there today. In 1950, another new telescope was built for use at Mt Wilson: the 6-inch Ewing Kapp Telescope which is still on show there today! In 1957, a new 2 meter telescope was added to Mt Wilson Observatory; this telescope is known as “The Big One” because it measured almost 20 times better than any other instrument then being used there! Many other famous scopes have been preserved over time including those used by Alice Roberts Lewis during her Mercury exploration mission and by Edwin Hubble during his research into astronomy!
