Newport Beach is a small town in Orange County, California, United States. It was established in 1907 as an agricultural community on the then-peninsula of Newport Harbor. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It became a city in 1966 and is located adjacent to Los Angeles on the south coast of Orange County. The first settlers in Newport Beach were two brothers named Harry and John Eisenstadt who had been born in 1867 and 1870 respectively in Russia. They sailed to Southern California aboard the "Emmalyn" when it arrived there on July 10, 1907. From their home at 9th Street and Arroyo Drive they started farming land that they divided among themselves including 5000 acres (20 km²) of what is now known as Newport Beach Peninsula. All five brothers operated their farms independently but worked together during harvest time which allowed them to share profits equally. Harry Eisenstadt died suddenly while harvesting potatoes near his farmstead on October 16, 1907 while Harry's brother John took over running the farm with help from his father until he too passed away in 1908. John's widow Hilda continued running the farm alone until 1916 when she married Edwin Swayne who also ran a farm nearby for about 20 years before passing it along to his son Edward Swayne Jr., one of four children born to him and Hilda Kingman Swayne (1884-1973). On December 12, 1915 Hawaii–born American aviator Charles Lindbergh flew his monoplane across Long Beach Bay from Point Mugu lighthouse westward towards Seal Island following a solo flight that began at 6:30 A.M.. After landing at Point Mugu, Lindbergh completed a circumnavigation of North America before flying back eastward over Catalina Island which he reached just after 5:00 P.M.. This event helped stimulate aviation research throughout much of World War II as aircraft were needed for strategic bombing raids against targets such as German factories inside Japan where available resources were limited or unavailable
The first permanent white settlement in Newport Beach was established in 1887 by Captain John S. Eliot and his wife, Belle Phillips. The town began as a small agricultural community near the mouth of the Santa Ana River. In 1907, Captain Eliot's son-in-law, Harry Chandler, founded the Chandler Hotel and Casino on Cadiz Street. In 1912, the city of Newport Beach was incorporated and soon became one of Southern California's largest cities with a population of over 100,000 people.
