Newport Beach is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 66,821 at the 2010 census. It is the only city in Orange County and is the county seat of Santa Ana County. The first people to live here were the Ohlone Indians who hunted and gathered subsistence for their own needs from what is now downtown Newport Beach. In 1795, Spanish missionary Father Junípero Serra founded Mission San José de Guadalupe on Point Loma overlooking Newport Harbor. After years of construction and multiple changes in leadership,Mission San José de Guadalupe was completed in 1826 and became part of Rancho Los Alamitos which then passed down to ranch hands until it was sold to General Edmund Teller in 1897 for $2 million. The name "Newport" came about because this area had been accessible only by boat due to its large number of salt water streams that emptied into Newport Harbor. In 1907 developer Ettore Sgarbi purchased land east of Point Loma from Commodore John Docks (founder of Long Beach) for $1 million and began development with his construction company, Sgarbi & Sons Construction Company. This spurred further development along Torrance Boulevard with several hotels, a movie theater (the Regal), tennis courts, a park named after Lieutenant Governor Earl Warren (later Ulysses S Grant), as well as new residential subdivisions developed such as Laguna Hills and Surfside Heights. By 1936 over 60% of all homes were built on PCH between Torrance Boulevard and I-5 south of Pasadena Avenue; this section also includes much demolished shoreline “shacks” from before post-World War II Shoreline Development Act regulations mandated that all shorelines be reconstructed according to modern codes . As growth continued inland along Torrance Boulevard – one reason why high-rise buildings did not become common until the late 1960s – many smaller businesses closed or moved out as well leaving behind vacant lots which have since been filled with parking lots for high-end apartments or other commercial uses including One Irvine Plaza tower now known as The Deck at The Huntington Center mall which opened in 2003 across from Dodger Stadium

Newport Beach is a beach town in Orange County, California, located on the Pacific Coast. The population of Newport Beach was 269 as of 2010. It is an affluent beach town with a Mediterranean-styled architecture and a rich history. The first European to set foot on what is now Newport Beach was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who explored the coast in 1542 during his circumnavigation of the world. In 1876, American Commodore John D. Sloat claimed part of present-day Newport Beach for the United States after sailing around Cape Horn from Panama City to Alcatraz Prison in 1875 aboard USS "Albatross". Ulysses S. Grant visited Newport Beach in 1879 while campaigning for president and likely saw it for the first time. In 1886, developer Ebenezer Howard built one of the city's original hotels: The Beverly Palace (). It has been called "the mother hotel" of Newport because it was where most formal events were held until more recent times. The hotel still stands today and offers guest rooms, meeting space and food services including a sushi restaurant and coffee roasters. In 1907, local man Elmer Gantry built Gantry's Pier (), which served as both lodging and commercial center for many years; its wharf remains today as one end of Park Boulevard near Church Street.). During World War II Naval Shipyard workers used Gantry's Pier to store munitionscks while they were being repaired at sea; because no pier remained afterward after shipyards closed their doors during that war, much coastal land became lost forever when those warehouses burned down or were destroyed by storms or vandalism (e.g., Black Hawk Creek Dam). A few blocks east along Park Boulevard from Gantry's Pier is Donato's Pizza (), founded by Donato Marino in 1945 adjacent to Donato’s Seafood Restaurant (); both restaurants remain open today despite multiple attempts by vandals to damage them over time (see also: list of vandalized businesses in Newport Beach). In 1954–1957 two new high school campuses were constructed next door on land that had once been part of Officer Candidate School field training ranges—one across from Donato’s Pizza and another behind it on 1st Street (). Officers Candidate School moved out again beginning in 1967 but Giftshop Campus retains its building until this day (). Today nearly all administrative offices are located inside One Hope Road Senior Center () off Airport Way () just south of Veterans Memorial Coliseum which houses several stores including Macy’s Department Store (), Sears Holdings (), JCPenney () and Home Depot (). Many residents commute into Santa Ana or Irvine through nearby Interstate 5 . There have also been plans announced recently to demolish parts of One Hope Road Senior Center () so that development could take place at what would have been its eastern end opposite Veterans Memorial Coliseum instead creating parking lots for about 100 homes although those plans are currently under review
The city of Newport Beach was established in 1915 by a group of businessmen and civic leaders. The area that is now Newport Beach was originally part of Buena Park, but the city was incorporated on May 14, 1915. The originalCity Hall building, which still stands today, was built on the corner of Third Street and Ivanhoe Avenue. The city grew rapidly due to the influx of workers from Southern California during World War I. New businesses were established in the early 1920s such as Don Quixote’s Mexican Cantina and Dick’s Sporting Goods. In 1923, the first public swimming pool opened in Newport Beach. In 1932, City Council voted to name downtown Newport Beach after its founder James Irvine. The city also designated Spring Street as its main business district. During World War II, Newport Beach became one of two cities in Orange County that supported military activity with their citizens providing food and munitions for the war effort. Many local businesses took advantage of this opportunity by wartime expansion including Don Quixote’s Mexican Cantina which became known as “the Pacific Coast Command cantina” because its clientele included military members stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Furthermore, many patriotic organizations were formed within Newport Beach during World War II such as American Legion #9090 and Veterans Affairs Auxiliary #1128
