Newport Beach is a city located in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 82,562 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County and the fifth most populous city in Southern California. Prior to becoming an incorporated town on November 12, 1892, Newport Beach was known as Yorba Linda. The first knife made in what is now Newport Beach were two-edged blades called "Polecats" which were used for fishing and camping purposes. In 1886, Samuel Morse designed and built the first sawmill in Orange County which provided a new source of income for the townspeople. The sawmill became operational and produced wood that was shipped by boat down the Santa Ana River to Mission Bay for processing into lumber. In 1892, incorporation of Newport Beach occurred with a view to attracting businesses within its boundaries that would tax themselves with respect to their location within the community limits rather than drawing assessments from adjacent property owners who had theretofore been forced to contribute money towards building maintenance or other municipal functions through assessments levied against their land values (the so-called " assessor's fee"). A key factor contributing to this decision by local government was the fact that many residents of neighboring cities such as Anaheim and Huntington had begun moving out of those areas due to high real estate prices and improved job opportunities elsewhere in Southern California following annexation by Los Angeles County during 18701930. As a result of this migration several small businesses closed up shop within walking distance of downtown Newport Beach while larger commercial enterprises relocated away from unincorporated communities throughout Orange County because they could no longer afford such high rates of assessment levied against them by village governments (as opposed to being able to generate sufficient economic activity outside their borders).
